Front lawns littered with red Solo cups and crushed beer cans. Trash cans brimming with frat party flyers and drained bottles. Sticky shot glasses lying supine on kitchen counters. The detritus of another Saturday night at Penn. And, to lend credit to Penn's reputation as the "social Ivy," potentially the telltale remnants of any night of the week.

If there's any truth in today's headlines, America is currently clashing with every axis of evil on the planet, and it seems that rising temperatures are our latest enemy on this never-ending list of evildoers. According to the cover of Time Magazine, "How We Can Win the War on Global Warming" is by following a detailed battle plan laid out in the pages of its latest issue.

Recipes of the Week: New South Barbecue

In my family, summer wouldn't be summer unless we gathered everyone - cousins and all - for a mid-summer barbecue. Here are the Bright family's favorite recipes for a lazy July afternoon.

Ingredients:

One 6-lb bone-in Boston butt (a cut of pork shoulder)

For the rub:

1 tablespoon of:

mustard

minced garlic

cilantro

chopped jalapeño pepper

cumin

black pepper

kosher salt

olive oil

vinegar

For the sauce:

¼ cup white vinegar

¼ cup lime juice

1 tbsp minced garlic

1 tbsp chopped jalapeño

1 tbsp roughly chopped cilantro

A dash dried habenero powder

You will also need a Webber, or any type kettle grill and hickory chunks.

Retake the Remake

A few months ago I took on the (ultimately unfortunate) assignment of reviewing Michael Haneke's own remake of his brilliant 1997 commentary, Funny Games. While the original film was horrifyingly novel, leaving me in a cold sweat by the final freeze-frame of Arno Frisch's deranged smile, the remake found me struggling to remain awake.

Dear James,

I'll never forget the first time I saw you. You were walking on hind legs, striding across the screen as a Mr. Tumnus so good-looking, C.S. Lewis would consider the pros of bestiality. How could I resist? Your charming faux-English accent (does it bother you that no one realizes you're Scottish?), your limpid baby blues (actually, turquoise - definitely turquoise) and earnest grin single-handedly made me renounce Judaism.

Tapes 'n Tapes - Minneapolis's rags-to-riches rock boys - return to their comfort zone of clanging riffs and Jim James echo-y vocals on their second album, Walk It Off. While it took them the better part of three years to cook up a sophomore effort, the album neither evolves sonically from nor stumbles upon the ramshackle success of its predecessor, The Loon.

The First Unitarian Church, All Ages
If it's true that there is power in numbers, then this Swedish pop ensemble could move mountains. Emmanuel Lundgren and 20 (20!) of his musician friends will cross the Atlantic for two East Coast shows, showcasing their dynamic talents on guitars, drums, keyboards, xylophones, trumpets and everything in between.

For 30 minutes you have been waiting in your 4th floor Harnwell room. You sit there, stupidly, unaware of the harrowing crisis taking place right outside your room. You don't know it, but your two best friends, Nate and Rich, are trapped in an elevator. If you did know, you would pass out.

I can jump up and down stairs on a pogo stick, but despite every tool at my fingertips - cell phone, e-mail, Skype and even stamps and envelopes if I feel like going retro - I often struggle to maintain constant contact with my friends located far from Philadelphia.
