This Unexpected Genre Will Get You Through Your Workday

In my workday hours spent compiling databases, copy editing and drafting emails, I'm also busy churning out a formula for the perfect ambient office music. Turns out, it's more about what music shouldn't do to you while you're sitting at a desk: it shouldn't make you want to cry; it shouldn't make want to stand up on your swivel chair and dance (#elevatedsurfaces); it shouldn't make you want to rage against The Man and punch a whole in the plaster wall of your office. Music that makes you feel too intensely is the opposite of what you want while stuck in the same spot for 8 hours a day: you need tunes with a sedative property, the music equivalent of a hit or a Xanax (Ed. note: Don't do drugs, do music!). After a month and a half spent furtively browsing Spotify in between stuffing name tags into envelopes, I've discovered the perfect genre: French Indie Pop. Weirdly specific, I know, but there's more out there than you think and it all fits the bill.

And if you still need me prove to you that French Indie Pop is the niche genre you need to get you through your nine to five, here's a 10–hour playlist to last you the whole day through.
