It’s that time of the year. The days get colder, the sun sets earlier and inevitably, Pottruck’s attendance rate begins to look like that of a 9 a.m. Friday lecture at DRL. The dedicated are distinguished from the fair-weathered and everyone at good ol’ Pottruck starts looking a little familiar. For the few who do make it out in the winter, each gym-goer has his fixed location. Despite our own pretenses (read: laziness) about the gym, we decided to explore every corner of Pottruck and get the scoop on campus’s own fitness center.

When navigating our way through the first floor cardio room, we couldn’t help but notice a trend amongst all of its inhabitants: they were all very attractive. These “Hottrucks” are spandex-clad, with freshly applied mascara. These may really be Penn’s fittest and finest, but they are also be all too aware of the exposure the first floor offers to Walnut Street passersby. As we made it up the stairs, we found the second floor weight room stocked with Penn’s serious gym-goers. No socializing or texting here.

If BBMing is more your forte, then cut through the double doors, past the bromance that is the basketball courts and into the workout room that is 100% socialite-friendly. This not-so-secret space is filled with the trendiest workout routines and the sound of thumbs rapidly moving across the keypad. Greek lettered apparel is aplenty, and the 30-minute-per-machine rule is rarely disobeyed. As we move upstairs to the third and fourth floors, it’s pretty obvious what motivates people to climb up three flights of stairs before their workout even begins. Here is the home of men who love ellipticals and women who sweat an embarrassing amount. These folks seem to share a de facto agreement that what happens upstairs, stays upstairs. As for us, in this weather, we think the hike to DRL and back is exercise enough.
