My favorite sound used to be the flutter of tiles changing on the arrivals board inside 30th Street Station in Philadelphia. The split–flap display is old–fashioned, true, and it can't help but bring bad news of the trains’ inevitable delays. But it sounds like butterfly wings, like a cat lapping milk with a tender pink tongue, like the safety of huddling under an awning during a downpour. Going home for Thanksgiving or Christmas, standing in the chilly chamber of the station, duffel in hand, I cherished that sound.

Jonah Platt was on lunch break from rehearsal on the set of Jesus Christ Superstar Live! when we talked on the phone last month. He’s a 2008 College graduate and actor, writer, and singer. “I wear a couple different hats,” he said. Platt’s been busy since he was a student, so we caught up with him to discuss his career, his stint on Jeopardy, and his apparent dislike of Yoko Ono.

The Kelly Writers House hosts events all the time. There’s usually food, and always a throng of eager English majors sitting on the mismatched wooden chairs. But there aren't always American Sign Language interpreters and a discussion on how to best represent the unspoken language onto the page in English.

Anthony Anchelowitz came to Penn as a mechanical engineer but made the switch to cinema studies and communications, all the while juggling his many passions. He told Street about his role in the a cappella community, the most underrated spot on campus, and what every student needs to do before graduating.

On the easternmost edge of Penn’s campus is the Class of 1923 Arena. Inside the arena, above the ice rink and the seats, there’s a concrete walkway that rings around the building’s interior. Up there, there’s a little dugout with a table and internet access. That’s where Luke Mullan (C '19) sits when he commentates on the Penn Men’s Hockey club games.

Kathryn Wilson rolls her eyes at me as we sit in Platt Student Performing Arts House. “It’s the most convenient week ever to get sick,” she laughs. She’s being sarcastic, of course. A few days later the Glee Club had their spring show—needless to say, Kathryn had been pretty busy.

Behind the scenes at last weekend’s Vagina Monologues was the show’s producer Ariana Martino. Wearing a hat with the signature red V, Ariana talked about VagMons and their role on Penn’s campus.

Serena Bian (C’ 18) was a sophomore when she first read the letters. She was sitting in a coffee shop and found herself sobbing in front of strangers. She’d found the Dear Penn Freshmen website, where upperclassmen upload heartfelt reflections and words of wisdom on their times at Penn.

Last Wednesday night, people crowded Hillel’s second floor to listen to Peter Stern’s life story. Peter Stern is 81. He lives in Haverford. He’s a retired teacher. And he gives speeches at middle schools and high schools and at places like Penn.

It had been one of those days. You know the type. You don’t need the specifics to understand, but I was tired, frustrated, and bored by life in general. I was annoyed at everyone, mostly at myself. I had gotten back into bed in the early afternoon, but I knew if I stayed there another moment I might explode.

Deb Varvoutis can multitask. She doles out falafel and veggie chili to polite students who’ve waited in line for 10, 15, 20 minutes, braving the January wind. In between all of her gentle "How are you?" and "Make sure you grab a fork!" banter with customers, she tells me about Magic Carpet, the food cart she’s worked at for the last three decades.

In 2012, Philadelphia native Nicole Marquis opened the first HipCityVeg. Five years later, she now runs Bar Bombón and Charlie was a sinner. in Center City, as well as four HipCityVeg locations across Philly and DC. Roxane Gay is full of contradictions. In her memoir Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body, she writes about the abundance of weight–loss reality TV shows. “I hate these shows, but clearly I watch them,” she writes. “I watch these shows because even though I know how damaging and unrealistic they are, part of me still yearns for the salvation they promise.”

They say truth is stranger than fiction. In American Horror Story: Cult, they’re one in the same. The seventh season of the show, which premiered September 5 on FX, centers on post–election America and the unsettling repercussions in one woman’s life.

Penn’s various college houses operate with a common policy: no pets, except for service animals and the occasional fish. Penn Residential Services states that animals in dorms “pose potential health problems,” “cause destruction of University property,” and can disrupt other residents. The penalties for violation of these rules include steep fines and possible loss of University housing.

Romantic comedies, when done right, achieve the best of both categories. Their laughter isn’t cheap or hollow because it relies on depth of character and place. And the romance isn’t saccharine because it’s peppered with sincere wit. The Big Sick belongs in the ranks of When Harry Met Sally and 10 Things I Hate About You.

Do we have an obligation to consider artist when we consume art? Are we beholden to the maker—and all of the possibly problematic issues with that artist—even when we only see the final, polished product?
