Sarah* could already picture her new apartment in San Francisco's Mission District. She had just returned to Penn after her summer internship. The Wharton senior with a Computer & Information Science (CIS) minor had just landed a full-time offer from a San Francisco software engineering firm, with a signing bonus so steep she could feel the house keys in her hand. But before she could accept her nearly six-figure income and start apartment-hunting, Sarah had some decisions to make. Should she take her offer and cruise for the rest of senior year, recruit for other firms, or negotiate her current offer?

It was the beginning of fall semester this year, and I was sitting on a bench on the first floor of Huntsman Hall, the one right by the stairs that leads down to the forum. I was in between classes and feeling that anxiousness and dread that overcomes me whenever I’m in Huntsman. It’s an internal monologue full of doubts about lacking direction, where my own purposelessness nags at me until I get frustrated at myself.

In the land of England there is a summer alcoholic beverage unparalleled in taste, merriness and drunkenness–making. It’s what Will and Kate drink at the garden parties, while Prince Harry is riding around on his pretty pony playing polo. It’s what the Queen knocks back quickly behind a curtain before she appears in front of cheering crowds (of American tourists coming to Buckingham Palace). They drink it at the cricket matches and on the boats that sail past Big Ben on the Thames. It’s Pimms.

This week, Street hit up Commons and started making friends. First, an employee who has been working at Commons since 2012. She likes to giggle and gossip with students about weekend parties, potential hookups and how expensive but necessary it is to get their hair and eyebrows done.

Girard is the funky new luncheon place in Fishtown. The espresso with milk ($4)—their unique blend designed especially for caffeine addicts—was quickly fetched for me upon my arrival. They also brought me a cup of the peach tea ($3), which had a daintily bitter bite.

Potlucks are the way to go. For starters, there aren’t many dining options where I can stay in my sweatpants, in the company of people who don’t care about what I look like. Potlucks mean we can get down and dirty cooking in my kitchen, and feel proud to prepare at least one substantial meal of the week. Chicken, beef, pasta or heating up leftover Wishbone: potlucks prove to Mom that I’m independent enough to cook for myself and my friends. After being up to your eyeballs in meetings all week, what could be better than having a genuine conversation? Not, “How are you?” or “How was your midterm?” I’m talking about some quality time chattin’ with my homies. Making this time for friends also means fulfilling my secret ambition to become Julia Child, or at least to emulate her baller cooking in every way that I can. I’m excited to practice cooking, all for the rewarding struggle of impressing my guests—the supportive grimaces when my friends are sitting around my table, tucking into my “well–cooked” lasagna. (Note to self: invite freshmen friends because their standards are lower.).

Mangia doesn't make a great first impression. It's humid and greasy—smelling, for starters. But, we figured that out of three menus they offered, something probably wouldn't suck.

Last Saturday, I headed off campus to catch the Mask and Wig Show, A Comedy of Terrors. Looking to switch up my weekend routine, I was keen to replace the drama of Greek life with, you know, actual drama.

Desperate to take a break from the creatively–dead confinement of my Wharton existence, I went to see Ali Lotz’s installation, “Les Fumeurs,” in the Addams gallery for the Junior Show.
