Ten doors down from the storied Rumor Nightclub sits Mission Taqueria. One of Rittenhouse’s many upscale eateries and awash in a glow of young professionalism, this new Mexican restaurant looks to be the trendiest thing we’ve seen since Adidas Superstars and ironic baseball caps.

One of us is a snob that has a very strict definition of what pizza is: It must have gluten, tomato sauce, and cheese. One of us is a plebe that doesn’t understand why people make fun of Papa John’s. One of us thinks pizza, at its core, is really ornate bread and the term flatbread is really just fancy pizza. We went to five different Philadelphia pizza joints to try various foodstuffs that may or may not actually be pizza, despite being defined that way on the menu.

When current RA (and Ego of the Week) Bobby Lundquist (C ’16) was interviewing for his RA position at Fisher Hassenfeld College House at the end of his sophomore year, he was asked: “What do you want your residents to remember you for?” His answer? “That I made fresh bread for them every week.” And make fresh bread he has.

Just by looking at him, you can tell that Christopher Owens, clad in a leather jacket, bell bottoms and a cowboy hat, is far from typical. This San Francisco–based musician and songwriter has quite the biography: he grew up part of the Christian cult The Children of God, moved across Asia and Europe throughout his youth, and finally left when he was 16 to join his older sister in Amarillo, Texas. After nine years there, Owens ultimately moved to San Francisco, where he’s stayed for the past decade.

This latest addition to Philly’s growing list of plant–based restaurants was developed by Nicole Marquis, who also owns HipCityVeg and Charlie Was A Sinner.
