At the edge of Spring Garden, near the Community College of Philadelphia, lies the newly opened Heffe Tacos. It’s hot, humid, and hellish in Philly. NSO festivities, darties, parties, and long afternoons endure, as does the hustle and bustle of a new semester. But this summer, we will not let the moist heat take over without a fight. This summer, we will thrive, and so will our makeup. I’ve compiled some useful tips derived from experience (my own and that of my close friends), and the internet. Enjoy!

I spot Arjun Malik (C ‘18) from across the room: tall, lanky, looking for someone in the clamor of Saxby’s. With all the noise, how could this be anyone’s preferred place to do anything? “It’s close to my place,” he admits, citing laziness for his choice in meeting place.

Immigrating to a new country has inherent consequences. Aside from more immediate issues like citizenship status, there are less urgent but still crucial problems that deserve more attention. Imagine going to class for three hours a week in the Writing Center, not having any homework due, and not knowing what to expect at all. The only thing you know is that you will be using your laptop and surfing the web with your classmates and your professor—definitely not something you would do in a typical class. There’s a class like that at Penn, and not just in your dreams. It’s called Wasting Time on the Internet (ENGL 111), taught by Kenneth Goldsmith, and it’s one of the many iconic classes Goldsmith teaches at Penn.

Like most of us in high school, I was guilty of pursuing many different hobbies at once, and piling up too many club duties to handle, oftentimes begrudgingly sacrificing one for another, more prominent position. Throughout my life, I never really felt a strong bond to most of the activities that I participated in. Some people aren’t like this at all—they find a passion and stick to it. Anish Welde (C’21) is one of these people.

When I was applying for housing last summer as an incoming freshman, I was set on one thing only: living in a single. Whether it be in the Quad, Hill, or any of the other freshman housing options, my main goal was to eat, sleep, and live alone. I witnessed classmates who I hadn’t yet met in real life scrambling for roommates on Facebook, while others chose to “go random” to let fate decide.

College. In terms of love, it’s a term associated with meaningless hookups, Tinder, casual sex, Bumble, friends with benefits, Seeking Arrangements, and a glorification of the “no strings attached” style relationship. Then, there’s the crowd of hopeless romantics, or an increasingly larger crowd (after freshman year, at least), of people looking for long–term relationships.

Meet The Greenfield Intercultural Center. Fondly known as the GIC to those who have been involved with it before, the Greenfield Intercultural Center serves as a home to countless students on campus.

Children outside leap playfully, it’s warmer than usual, and cloudier. I can feel the ambiance changing from comfort to a sort of suspense as I see a small sign with the title “The Colored Girls Museum.” I realize, that despite brief research, I don’t know what to expect.

On some days, the warm sun shines down intensely, kissing his skin. On other days, the cold pierces right through him, the harsh wind scraping roughly against his nimble limbs. His heart does not race because he is nervous. In fact, he is perfectly calm and comfortable, regardless of the weather. Marvin has learned to trust the process.
