Today, I sit here at my computer hurt and confused. I’m exhausted, the weather is gloomy and the general attitude on campus is sadness and anger. It’s a rare occasion, to walk around campus and exchange glances with peers, teachers and friends, silently understanding the negativity in their minds. I woke up today to tears, fear, anxiety and a glass ceiling still intact. Worse yet, I also woke up to hatred. Hatred in our leadership and hatred within ourselves.

You're back at Penn and the first thing you need is topics for those post-summer mini-catch-up conversations. We all know you don't want to spew the same "so, what did you do this summer?" line, so why not stand out from the crowd and include a little music news? A lot of things happened this summer. Here's the low down.

Merry Chrismukkah! Francis and the Lights released a new single featuring Bon Iver and it is everything we have always wanted and more. Featuring Bon Iver's vocals (we welcome them back with open arms) in multi-layered harmony over a stripped electronic track, its simplicity at its finest. Accompanying the release was the song's music video, and here's where we were confused. The video is cool and minimalist, shot in one take in a large, white room. But hold up. Is that Kanye? Yup. Kanye shows up in the beginning of the video, and we're not too sure why. Whatever, per usual he'll probably make that bitch famous. Take a listen/watch but mostly a listen.

These days, music genres are blurred. There’s electronic, indie, soul… and then there’s all those babies combined into one papa genre. Indie-Electro-Soul. What is it? Well, who knows. I made it up. All we know is that when we try and explain the genre of songs on this playlist, we end up forgetting our own names. But we feel it in our hearts that they should all exist under one genre. The one thing we can say about this playlist is that there’s a lot of estrogen here. Each one has a fine, smart, accomplished, respectable, hot-ass lady providing the lead vocals. Take a listen.

Hello humans of the top party school. Sadly, fling season is over, but a new season is here. Formal season…and YOU know what that means....Nothing says “will you have sex with me after we put on nice clothing and go to an expensive venue for 20 minutes” like a “will u go formal with me?” text. Ah...what a romantic generation.

Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, The Temptations... names that were definitely referenced in your childhood, if you're a college student like me. Their music featured grooving instrumental backgrounds, gorgeous soulful voices singing in flawless harmony and cool dynamic rhythms. It gave their music a certain wow-factor. Well - these musicians were the architects of the genre of Soul. Now, Leon Bridges, a texas–based 26–year old musical songbird, is bringing the genre back with style.

Senior societies. Have you heard of them? Sphinx, Friars, Hex, Omega…. most people have heard the names but have no idea what they represent or what it takes to get into them. All of them (usually) consist of leaders in their specific fields: the College, Greek life, Wharton, Engineering, but one stands out from the rest. It's Penn's performing arts senior society: Osiris. It consists of some swaggy people in theatre, dance, a cappella... you name it. We sat down with a member of the society, Emily Lipka '16, to give you low down on what’s good in Osiris.

How many times a day do you think you listen to music? In my day to day routine I eat, walk and breathe with my headphones in. But that’s just me.

If you don’t know what the space just two doors down from Metropolitan Bakery with the words “Slought” overhead is—well, it's a non–profit organization named Slought. Shocker. From the outside it seems simple, but you'll find when you enter and engage with what lays inside, you'll come out with an elevated sense of what's around you.

Your tan has faded, post–spring break “awkward Monday” has come and gone, and you’re 7 pounds heavier—alcohol calories, man. YET, St. Party’s Day and spring are just around the river bend... mixed emotions here. So, to get you ~back in the mood~ we’ve added some feel good tunes to the Back2School playlist because well, you’re back at school. Idiots.

Spontaneity. A key word when talking about the concerts that Sofarsounds has been organizing since its inception. The company organizes live events in over 231 cities. The catch? Prior to the event, a concert–goer knows neither the artist nor the venue. You won’t even know you’re physically attending until a few days before. To get tickets to the event, you need to “apply." You just click a button and fill out your name and email. If you're chosen, you get the details of the venue a few days before. The allure of a sofarsounds event is that the participant is required to shed his or her reliance on plans. Schedules, meetings, plans. Everyone operates under the influence of minutes and seconds. Sofarsounds pushes us to embrace the spontaneous.

The Uber pregame. The pivotal event in a night, wise men say. The interim between pregame and event. This is a very calculated process. If you’re smart, you’ll listen.

It's almost Valentine's Day, people, so listen up if you want to be sexcessful. Sex songs are a genre of their own. The song can’t be too fast, as couples can quickly find themselves moving to the beat, and we are not going for synchronized sports here. On the other hand, it can’t be too slow, as that puts a damper on the mood. It shouldn't make you reminisce, it shouldn't make you cringe and it most definitely shouldn't prompt you to sing along (unfortunately, I speak from experience).

Last Tuesday, Oh Wonder stopped by Union Transfer on their first american tour. Not only did we attend the show, Street got to sit down with the masterminds behind the music—Josephine Vander Gucht and Anthony West—to pick their minds on the music industry, sponges and staying true to yourself and your passions.

The best way to get the down–low/low–down on what’s happening in music is to follow a music blog. Blogs are great for news, interviews, album releases, album reviews, etc. These people devote their lives to putting new music online, so take advantage of them. Potentially sexually.

Socializing is a treacherous task, performed successfully by few in our world. Now, take four weeks of said social activity and condense it into five days, and what do you get? Rush. Rush has arrived, people. Smile and wave, smile and wave. Now, we (legally) can’t give you too much advice on what srat/frat/off–campus–cult to join, but you should at least have some good music to get you through the process. Here’s a playlist that will aid you through the rest of this week of Greek. Our recommendation: start with Justin. Belieber or not, his new album is quite nice. Rushes are gonna be like, “Is it too late now to go GDI?”

As half of you are currently under house arrest (#rush), we’re giving you the tools to throw your own DIY frat party. This playlist will encourage you to drop it low—in the privacy of your own home—while you drink away the realization that you will be in VP for the next four months. So, if you have an unquenchable thirst for good music (some popular, some hidden jams), check this.
