Most students rush past the thin, steel peace sign statue near Van Pelt Library. But in 1969, when sculptor Robert Engman built the Peace Symbol, the statue easily fit in with the politically active and anti–war student body. The significance of the statue changed drastically years later — when activist Kathy Change lit herself on fire in front of the peace sign.
While I would not like to speak for everyone, I think it is safe to generally say that it can be hard to love yourself in America if you identify as any sort of minority or marginalized person. While it’s always going to be hard to identify as an “other” there are some things that can make it better. Mainly from a majority of other factors, but partially as a result of Obama’s 8 year term, my identity as queer, mixed race, and as child of an immigrant felt validated and supported (to some extent) in America.
You may have seen people on Locust rocking shirts with screen printed nipples on them, or “tit–tees,” as College sophomore Abby McGuckin calls them. Or maybe you’ve seen a fluorescent tee with Donald Trump's face surrounded by cats, and the words “Pussy Grabs Back,” created by the group colloquially known as We Are Watching. These fashion campaigns exist at the relatively new intersection of art, activism and apparel on Penn’s Campus.
Snapchat has, in recent years, become one of the primary social media platforms by which we stalk our past hookups, potential hookups and people we wish we could hook up with but are too scared to speak to. At any given moment, you can click on a story and see what someone was doing and how long ago they were doing it. Brb, running to Smokes', bae–who–doesn't–know–they–are–bae has a pitcher. But did you know that a person's favorite filter can provide insight into their personality and relationships even more scientific than their horoscope?
This was not the first time that a white boy had said a version of, “You’re pretty for a black girl,” as if that was supposed to turn me on. These sorts of statements imply a larger issue in the belief that black women are not as pretty as women of other races. There are beautiful people in every race and to think otherwise is, yes, racist, i.e. feeding into the system of power relations that places one race over another. This faulty logic is rooted in a long–standing history of colonialism and perpetuated by representations, or lack thereof, in all media forms in our culture.
Just because you caught the freshman plague doesn’t mean that you have to miss out on all the fun during the weekend. While we’ve all definitely rallied while fighting some unidentifiable sickness, there are good and bad ways to go about it.
It’s hard to ignore the fact that more and more men have been wearing makeup lately—myself included. It’s definitely caught people off guard, garnering the subtle (or not so subtle) double take or the, “Oh my Gosh are you wearing makeup?!” While men have been wearing makeup for a while now, only recently has it been getting popular culture and media attention and have cis men been embracing the trend of makeup.
Let’s be real here—there has to be more to grocery shopping in Philly than the eclectic aisles of the Fresh Grocer. Sure, it’s conveniently located and always open, but when you’re not in a crunch for time, check out some of these other great grocery stores near campus.
Going back to school is expensive, but sex doesn’t have to be (unless you’re really into leather). If you’re trying to smash responsibly, on a budget, without catching an itch and without accidentally contributing to the Penn class of 2034, campus has you covered—multiple buildings on campus provide free condoms. And, while we usually don’t recommend double–condomming due to the dangers of friction, Street has you covered, too, with this guide on where to find them.
