1. Hannah’s grandmother is dying: The episode opens with a phone call from Hannah’s mother: “Grandma’s going to die.” She urges Hannah to come to the hospital to say goodbye. There we meet Hannah’s extended family and her grandmother’s hospital bed is suddenly  wall to wall with crazy women.

2. The aunts: Hannah’s two aunts are actually insane. Watching their family dynamic helps us understand Hannah a lot better, and by comparison she may come off as the best. The three sisters are constantly bickering and making stabs at each other’s lives. Before their mother is even dead, they have divided up her pills and are post–it noting which possessions they want.

3. Cousin Rebecca: Rebecca is a high strung med student still holding some childhood grudges against Hannah. Their personalities clash almost as strongly as their mothers’ and the unease between them is tangible. Rebecca and Hannah continue to argue as they drive back to the hospital and it ultimately results in Rebecca hitting a parked car. Both sustain only minor injuries but Adam has rushed from the city to make sure Hannah is alright. Their interaction is the first redeeming relationship seen all episode and serves as a tension release.

4. Hannah and Adam get engaged: Well not really. Earlier Hannah’s mother prompted Hannah to lie to her grandma and say that she and Adam were getting married— a way to make a dying woman happy. Hannah mentioned this to Adam but the conversation turned south and was dropped. When Adam comes to the hospital for Hannah he decides to tell her grandma they are engaged. Hannah’s mother thanks them for the lie but once Adam leaves, she tells Hannah not to settle for an “odd man,” clearly thinking about her own marriage to Hannah’s father.

5. Hannah’s grandmother is dead: The episode ends with a phone call from Hannah’s cousin: “Grandma’s dead.” Hannah had returned to the city that morning thinking her grandma was going to be fine; when she gets the bad news she is immediately in denial about it.

Final Thoughts: By the end of the episode it seemed that Hannah’s grandma had gotten better and perhaps so had the relationships between the family. This is, as most good things on “GIRLS” are, short lived. How Hannah deals with this development remains to be seen—but we’re sure it’s going to be dramatic
