On a rainy Friday night, Halloween weekend, Caf‚ Habana is virtually empty. As the small Cuban place converts from restaurant to bar, the few customers there trickle out and smoke cigarettes under the awning, flirting with the Venezuelan bouncer. Friday is usually jumping at the Latin-flavored mojito bar, but with Shampoo throwing a blowout around the corner and the weather consistently dismal, it looks like it just might be a slow night.

Ten minutes after opening its doors on an overcast October morning, Ten Stone Tavern already has customers; seated at one of the bar's elegant tables, a pair of middle-aged men intently looks over the menu.

By the way it looked - completely empty - it was hard to believe the Italian-based Mercato had been named Philadelphia Magazine's Best BYOB of 2006 when we arrived to take an early, 5:30 p.m. dinner. But by 6:30 p.m., with the food out and every table now filled, it was easy to see why Mercato has been pulling in all the attention. It's simply that good.

Sunday morning is usually about what's convenient. But if you're trying to convince the girl from last night that you weren't joking, sometimes the decor of Bui's food truck just doesn't cut it. Caribou Cafe, located on Walnut between 11th and 12th, provides a satisfactory alternative. Although prices run a bit steeper than your average brunch spot, nothing on the menu at the deceptively large bistro will cut too deep into the checkbook. And with a diverse array of fresh and savory options, moving above and beyond Marathon Grill will be sure to strike a new chord with your impromptu date.

First things first: leave that hippy aversion at home. While Trader Joe's carries more than its fair share of granola, nonfat yogurt and organic kiwis, it's also crazy cheap, exceptionally tasty, and more than equipped to handle your standard shopping needs. And who knows -- with a little breaking in, that healthy crap might grow on you too.

Real thugs never die. Unfortunately, they also have trouble staying creative. Ghostface Killah's newest album, Fishscale, is yet another record to emerge from Wu-Tang's prolific machinery. While still a solid record, Fishscale lacks the explosiveness of previous Wu-Tang albums. And although the Killah sports an underdog champ's reputation, he fails to take us anywhere artistically. What's left is a grimy street sound -- a dependency that ultimately goes stale in the face of mediocre production.

Since their 1991 debut, Stereolab has functioned as one of the most influential -- if under the radar -- bands of the pseudo-pop electronica circuit. Their extensive catalog helped to establish the climate in which today's indie-electronica hybrids (such as Broken Social Scene) have thrived. 15 years later, point-people Tim Gane and Laetitia Sadier are still going at it with their March release, Fab Four Suture. And while the album drags at times, it inevitably succeeds, due in no small part to Stereolab's self-aware direction and refusal to stray from its charted course.

"The last time we were out on tour was two or three years ago. We've actually just been recording this album, and watching the children. Always watching the children."
