Day 1, Friday
Breakfast: A banana
Lunch: Kiwis and strawberries from the Fruit Salad cart at 37th and Spruce
Dinner: Quinoa with onions and mushrooms sauteed in olive oil and garlic, steamed peas, a dash of cold–pressed EVOO and basil pesto. Plus, a clementine for dessert.
Snack: Black olives
Drinks: Water (lots) and Whole Foods fresh–squeezed orange juice
What I did: Slept in, career fair, office hours, grocery store, worked on a paper
How I felt: After the first day, I'm more tired than usual, though,it’s likely from my week, not my lack of protein. I feel a little nauseated after eating a few things I normally avoid and constantly make fun of my health–nut housemates for loving (read: quinoa). Otherwise, I feel well and my biggest hurdle is figuring out what I’m allowed to eat — not keeping myself from eating all of that leftover Valentine’s Day candy sent from home.

Have you ever experienced the excitement of all–consuming love? The kind that takes your breath away and turns every day into a hazy blur of laughs, passionate kisses and Stars tracks? Neither have we. But we imagine it’s a little bit like director Drake Doremus’ Like Crazy.

On the sparse south end of Broad Street, loud music welcomes patrons to the club–like atmosphere of Tashan. The trendy decor hardly meshes with the traditional Indian cuisine, but the restaurant, which opened just over a month ago, boasts a classic menu that might inspire fans of UCity’s New Delhi to drop a little extra on dinner once in a while.

The Philadelphia Film Festival begins today and ends November 3rd, and since you can’t make it to every screening, you better know which to avoid. Having seen some of the line–up, these are the few to miss. So, what should you see? Cut out our schedule on the back page.

Every rising junior is forced to make the fateful decision of whether or not to study abroad. At the time, it seems there are infinite factors to consider. On campus, you have clubs and organizations that you are working your way up in, friends who swear they are staying and majors with required classes. And sometimes, for some, the allure of getting Penn credit for easy classes while drinking every night and jetsetting on weekends isn’t enough to pull them away from Philly. I was one of those people.

The early 2000s launched a series of unforgettable films that left catchy songs and choreographed steps stuck in our heads for weeks. The popularity of Chicago (2002) provided the sultry reintroduction of the stage to the screen, raising an interest in musical theater that extended beyond the panting NYU students lining up for rush tickets each Sunday morning. Once again, a seemingly location–and–monetarily exclusive art became accessible to everyone in a neatly wrapped package, one that included our favorite stars.

Political Science
Dirty politics have never been more appealing than they are now as director, writer, actor and all–around superstar George Clooney leads us through a controversial presidential campaign in Ides of March. Those who still haven’t mastered PSCI 130 will get a kick out of the Clooney/Gosling eye–candy fest. Maybe it’ll even serve as motivation to finally memorize those Constitutional amendments. (10/7)

With the actual 2012 nearing, it seems that apocalyptic films are becoming less far-fetched and more relatable, as demonstrated in Soderbergh’s latest. The villain in Contagion is not a Martian, but a rapidly spreading virus, one that will leave any impressionable audience member using Purell religiously for weeks.

After two successful documentaries released on Earth Day, the next documentary in Disney’s sequence delves into the heart of the Kenyan savannah. African Cats presents the lives of two rival lion prides and a cheetah struggling to raise her five cubs. Unlike the removed, voice-of-God narration of Earth and Oceans, the film documents life in the Masai Mara National Reserve by naming characters and creating a detailed dramatic plot.

In Sex and the City 2, the girls are back with the same wild outfits, the same posh cocktails and sex just as steamy as it was a decade ago. But this time around Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha and Miranda have a new set of issues: boring marriages, problem children, sexist bosses and hot nannies.

Disney’s newest earth day special, Oceans, explores the thought posed by a tiny blonde boy in the opening scene — “What is the ocean?” In an effort to answer the question Disney, guided by the narration of Pierce Brosnan, takes us into the sea to meet the characters that define it.

Venomous snakes, bird-eating spiders and man-eating crocodiles? Only one man is fit for this adventure — the Crocodile Hunter himself. After years of being glued to the television set following the adventures of Steve and Terri Irwin, I was more than ready for the film adaptation of Animal Planet’s Crocodile Hunter.

Hidden behind a frosted glass window adorned with a Valentine’s-esque heart, lies the comfy to erotic jumble that is Coeur. The little lingerie shop just off of Rittenhouse Square on 17th Street could seem intimidating to the faint of heart. One must brave the “Please Press Hard” doorbell to be buzzed into the tiny walk-up. But once inside, the selection is overwhelming.

Nestled among the boutiques of 3rd Street, Fivi stands out from the crowd with its unique and one-of-a-kind jewelry and bags. Walking in off of the quiet streets of Old City, shoppers are instantly greeted by one of the two owners, Fiona and Victoria — inspirations for the name “Fivi” — who are always eager to answer questions or just chat. Though smaller than many of its neighbors and definitely sparser inside, this gem of a store is filled with unique merchandise.
Specifically, Fivi prides itself on its rare and authentic pieces. The owners travel to New York craft shows to scour for new artists and traverse Philadelphia for locally-made items. Whether you’re in the market for a handmade beaded wallet, painted cigar box clutch or studded leather messenger bag, Fivi seems to offer something for everyone. And with a huge selection of both crafty and trendy jewelry (most pieces are under $100), it’s the perfect place to pick up a funky present or grab a new accessory.
Though the store focuses primarily on distinctive accessories, sweaters, scarves and home goods, a few solid pairs of shoes dot the display as well. Fivi panders to season-conscious shoppers with a stock peppered with leather, lace, zippers and bohemian prints. It also carries items that will encourage shoppers to indulge in the outdoorsy and sophisticated winter trends to come.

As little kids, we all fell asleep to our parents narrating Maurice Sendak’s tale of the adventures of Max and the Wild Things, dreaming of the adventures we could have as the ruler of a distant land. Forty years after its publication, the much-beloved and anticipated children’s story, Where the Wild Things Are, has finally made it to the silver screen.
