Social media has ushered in the era of microtrends, where online hypervisibility attributes to the success of certain styles in the market (i.e. these trends tend to leave just as quickly as they peak). The “clean girl aesthetic,” social media’s most recent fascination, has stormed the beauty world and occupied our online feeds. Paired well with the Scandinavian streetwear style, this new trend has been largely accredited with beauty leaders like Matilda Djerf, Bella Hadid, and Hailey Bieber—it’s all about the slicked–back hair, gold hoops, clear lip gloss, and minimal makeup look. No one really knows how long this trend is planning to stick around, but it doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere anytime soon.

“Po–wa–ha (water–wind–breath) is the essence of life. Existence is determined not by a physical body or other physical manifestation but by the breath, which is symbolized by the movement of the water and wind. It is the breath which flows without distinction through the entirety of animate and inanimate existences. … We flow in the Po–wa–ha along with all other manifestations of life.” — Rina Swentzell (Santa Clara Pueblo), 1993

After years of yielding to the stereotypical roles of Ravi from Jessie and Baljeet from Phineas and Ferb, the unstoppable Hollywood force who is Shonda Rhimes has provided South Asians—specifically South Asian women—with a breath of fresh air. Her casting choices for Netflix's Bridgerton Season 2 in selecting two dark skin Tamilian actresses for the show’s leads, paired with the subtlety of cultural hints throughout the show, is exactly what this community has been longing for. Simone Ashley’s Kate Sharma and Charithra Chandran’s Edwina Sharma are the Parvati and Padma Patil redemption that was so desperately needed after decades.

Dating online has a bad reputation already—the horror stories are endless and only seem to get worse with time. Television and media have illustrated distinctly the potential dangers of meeting a stranger online and getting a meal or a cup of coffee together. Hulu’s newly buzzed–about movie Fresh shows exactly that, in the initial scenes where Daisy Edgar–Jones’ Noa sits down for yet another failed date with yet another misogynistic douchebag. Maybe this feels familiar to you, maybe not, but this scene encapsulates the awkwardness and frankly, contemporary patheticness that revolves around first dates that are definitely not going anywhere.

In an economy where influencers have come to be viewed as all–knowing voices of reason and truth, the inevitability of celebrity brands shouldn't be a surprise. In the last few years, we’ve seen a spike in the amount of celebrity products—that is, creating their own brands as opposed to being the face of a brand they endorse. These include a diverse array of ventures, from beauty and wellness to fashion and food innovation.

Ask yourself this question: which app on your phone has most likely provided you with the greatest volume of news? There’s a chance that a lot of the time, when you’re not on the all–inclusive News app, you'll get your breaking news from a sudden tweet or a mutual friend’s Instagram story. In the digitized, fast–paced world we live in, it’s highly efficient to gather global facts and news updates from the engaging platforms at our fingertips. We rely on the reposted infographics and the social media headlines when we have no time to sit down on the couch and watch BBC or read the Philadelphia Inquirer.

It’s the week before date night and you’re in desperate need of a new outfit. You and your friends are all anxiously scrolling through the trendy retail sites, looking for the perfect dress, but there’s no luck. After a while, they all start to look the same—the sequins, the velvet deep green cowl neck, the black mesh sleeves. I’ve fallen victim to the same cyclical state before, but more often than not, I find myself considering if I should simply compromise for one of the hundreds of repetitive dresses on display at a Zara, Windsor, or Urban Outfitters. It’s quick and easy. Frankly, sometimes there seems to be no other choice and you feel the need to settle for fast fashion.
