Of Penn’s Class of 2022 early admission applicants, 25 percent benefitted from preferential admission. These students had better access to Penn’s campus, contact with admissions officers, and a better understanding of the college application process. Their parents and grandparents call Penn their alma mater, and often their siblings do too.

Dad cooked, Mom cleaned—that’s the way things were in my house. But, then my Dad got sick, and the way we thought about food in my house changed. At first, trips to the Greek grocery store were replaced with trips to hospitals. Eventually, Sunday dinner was eaten in the hospice cafeteria, and when there was no more Dad, take-out dinners were all my single, working mother of three could handle.

It was a wild year for cinema, and as much as the Academy Awards are about celebrating all that Hollywood has done in the past year, the 90th Oscars ceremony on Mar. 4 will make headlines for more than just the films. Here’s a drinking game that will make the tearful speeches and slow–moving reveals a little more fun.

It’s become a routine: I come home from day of school and work, take a shower, hop in bed—then I open Grindr. I scroll down the endless square photos of torsos, faces and legs, I send a few messages, exchange a few photos and wonder: why nobody is replying to me?

JMen, it's time to do better with skincare. Last month, GQ ran this piece on things that men can learn from Kim Kardashian’s beauty routine. With the cold weather rapidly approaching, it’s time for everyone to be ready to protect their skin and look their best, despite the borderline painful wind gusts that chap our lips, faces, and hands. Men might feel excluded from the world of skincare and beauty, but alas, good looks know no gender, so here are some basic steps men can take to look and feel better this fall.

Nestled above the hectic, market–like ground floor of Philadelphia’s Chinatown Square sits Dae Bak, a Korean eatery that opened its doors back in April. Dae Bak (which literally means “awesome” in Korean) is a hip but homey addition to an area already cluttered with restaurants. Once you make it onto the second floor of the Square and into the restaurant, warm color–changing lights reflect off of each wall, K–Pop softly plays over the buzz of conversation, and two giant TVs broadcast sports games, giving Dae Bak a laid–back, welcoming, yet cool vibe.

Though guards are a constant fixture at resident hall entrances, most students tap their PennCards without glancing at the people behind the help desk. Street asked two intrepid reporters to observe one night of freshman activity between 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.—from the perspective of an Allied Barton guard. Andreas Pavlou (C ‘19) sat at the entrance of Hill College House and Haley Weiss (C ‘18) at the Upper Quad Gate. From their side of the desk, guards observe things we never see, and pick up on patterns we don’t notice. Here’s what they saw during one night shift:

Although there’s no shortage of fusion cuisines in Philadelphia, Hawaiian food (which is fusion by nature) never had a permanent home in this city. That changed earlier this spring when Kiki Aranita and Chris Vacca expanded their fusion food truck business to include a permanent storefront in Rittenhouse Square. Poi Dog Philly started out in Headhouse Square as a food truck serving a variety of foods like Hawaiian plates, Filipino desserts and butter mochi. Now, it finally has a place to call home at 106 S. 21st Street.

Whether you lack confidence, discipline, or self–motvation, there's always one thing you've got handy: an excuse to not go to Pottruck. But there’s less of an excuse to skip your workout if you never have to leave home. Thanks to the Internet, there are plenty of ways to put in a decent workout without opening your door.

Tumblr Pink, Scandi Pink, Rose Quartz and Millennial Pink. These are the four different ways to refer to the trendy, soft pink color that has slipped its way into almost every facet of life these days. Millennial Pink, the more dusty, toned down version of Barbie Pink, has become ubiquitous in pop culture and fashion. If you’re having trouble conceptualizing this color, look no further than Drake’s Hotline Bling music video and album artwork, Rihanna’s Fenty Collection or Zayn’s pink hair.

What ever happened to crushing on someone? There’s lust and then there’s love, but what do you call the empty space in between that? I want to make a case for bringing back crushes: that innocent kind of attraction where you may not want something serious, but you’re sure as hell not looking to just smash and pass.

There’s more to relaxing than crawling under the covers and forgetting responsibilities for a few hours. In fact, too many of us at Penn don't take the time to relax. Often, relaxing can feel like a chore; taking the time for ourselves just means that we are taking time away from being productive. Relaxation isn’t relaxing if all you can think about is the next item on the to–do list.

With the official start of spring less than a month away and global warming fooling us into thinking that it's actually spring now, you may start to notice some unused, forgotten and unworn clothing and items in your dorm room. The air is fresher, the days are longer and warmer and you might be feeling like its time to get rid of the old. Spring cleaning usually implies throwing things away, but as college students, there are thriftier ways to profit or do good off of your spring cleaning. Websites like Depop, Mercari and Poshmark and stores like Buffalo Exchange are a great way to get rid of the old and make some cash.

The Royal Tea Truck, once part of the food truck landscape at Drexel, has found a new throne on Penn’s campus at 40th and Locust Streets. The bubble tea and lunch truck joins the growing number of bubble tea options in University City, including Winterfell on 40th and Ludlow Streets and Ochatto on 37th and Chestnut. Street decided to find out more about the move from Drexel’s campus, bubble tea and business in University City.

BYO culture at Penn wouldn’t be complete without Franzia. The company’s ubiquitous boxed wine can be found at popular spots on any given Thursday, Friday or Saturday night, and has done the almost impossible job of loosening the awkward social tension that’s bound to linger at a 20–person table of almost–strangers. Despite the wine’s presence in the lives of Quakers, it’s safe to say that not all Franzia is created equal. In fact, you can even rate a social situation (lituation?) based on the flavor of Franzia on the table.

Valentine’s Day in the United States is a pretty standard affair—chocolates, roses, candle–lit dinners with wine, you get it. However, around the world, many countries have different Valentine’s Day traditions and customs, and even different days for different genders and single people. With such a diverse student body at Penn, it’s only appropriate that we recognize some of the different ways love (or lack of it) is expressed around the world.

Coffee on colleges campuses is obviously huge, but where does tea fit into our lives as students? Some of us may only think of tea as a beverage to douse with lemon and honey when we come down with a cold, others may only get the tea in the form of gossip—but tea is such a beautiful thing. It can be your substitute for coffee, or something you use to unwind. With its seemingly endless list of types, tea drinking is both an adventure and an unwinder.

Move over Walnut: Chestnut is on the come–up. Walnut Street has always been important for Penn’s campus. With off and on campus housing, popular dining options and retail stores, the stretch of Walnut Street from 34th to 40th Streets is an integral part of life at Penn. However, just one street over, new housing options and dining options are a breath of fresh air on a street that was once considered uneventful.

Trendy, provocative, but simple—American Apparel, a once popular and thriving brand, will finally close its doors in April after years of financial turmoil. After filing for bankruptcy twice (once in 2011 and again in 2016) and ousting founder and CEO Dov Charney in 2014 because of sexual harassment lawsuits, the company was sold to Gildan Activewear. Despite recent reputation of American Apparel as a failing brand with slow sales and unchanging product lines, the company leaves a distinct cultural and economic legacy in the world of retail.
