Walking up and down Locust since Spring Break, you may notice that small, rose–colored boxes seem to be slowly, but steadily, taking over campus. You may notice Rachel Prokupek—graduate of Le Cordon Bleu Paris studying cuisine and pastry, Executive Director of Penn Appetit Cookbook, and innovator behind the group's Whisk cookbook—running a baklava business out of Huntsman GSRs and her apartment. Maybe you've come across some of her wildly successful and fan–photo based Instagram accounts and campaigns, which showcase the visual beauty of Rachel's craftsmanship.
Every year people get incredibly excited for Center City Restaurant Week, frantically refreshing Open Table for reservations to Barbuzzo, Little Nonnas, or any Stephen Starr restaurant. However, many people forget that throughout the rest of the semester, other areas in Philly offer the same, if not better, restaurant week deals at delicious and lesser–known restaurants. From February 25 to March 8, many restaurants on East Passyunk Avenue are offering three–course lunch and dinner deals for prices ranging from $15–30. Make sure to read below for the places that you cannot miss this upcoming Restaurant Week, categorized based on how big a hole you want to burn in your wallet.
Philadelphia is grossly underrated as an arts city. I mean, how often do you think about the fact that we just so happen to have a Van Gogh sunflower painting at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, or that the walls of the Barnes Foundation are dripping with Matisse and Cézanne paintings. Moreover, the City of Brotherly Love is a hub for the performing arts as well, with comedy clubs and small theaters galore. In order to celebrate the theater scene of Philly and the tri–state area, Theater Philadelphia is bringing back Philly Theater Week, which aims to make theater more accessible to the local community.
With Thanksgiving around the corner, most people tend to think about all the turkey, stuffing, and mashed potatoes they'll be consuming during the holiday. Not me! I’m thinking about sweet potato pies covered in ooey–gooey melted marshmallows, pumpkin pies with graham cracker shells, and crunchy pecan pies filled with decadently sweet maple syrup and brown sugar. If you're anything like me, you need to check out the following places to get your pie—fix for the upcoming holiday season.
As I sat down at Perla, all I saw were banana leaves lying on the table. I quickly looked around to find no sign of silverware or plates. The restaurant was very small and well–lit, with an open kitchen right behind our table. I knew I was trying a traditional Filipino meal, but to be completely honest, I had no idea what I was getting myself into.
Philadelphia just got a major revamp with the opening of the Comcast Technology Center, which will soon be the home to the new Four Seasons Hotel. But that's not all—the Comcast building is also home to Vernick Coffee Bar, and soon to be home of Vernick Fish.
Are you in the mood for pizza that's a step above the rest, including well–loved, but well–worn on–campus favorites like Zesto's or the pizza in Houston Market? Venture to Baltimore and 43rd streets for epic pizza, an amazing beer selection, and extremely relaxed vibes.
With this unusual October humidity, any cold snack sounds appealing. When it comes to beating the heat, what you need is a bowl of frozen yogurt covered in whatever your sweet tooth is craving. You can be "healthy" with a scoop of strawberries or treat yourself to cookie dough, chocolate chips, Nutella, and more. Either way if you aren't breaking the weighing scale with your toppings, you are doing something wrong. Here’s a breakdown of some of my favorite go–to places, whether it's to take a much–needed break with friends or order delivery to the door of Van Pelt.
This summer, Houston Market went through serious renovations and opened several new vendors, in addition to updating fan-favorites. We tried every station in Houston during the lunch rush. Here’s what we thought of each place based on the quality and healthiness of their food, and whether or not it's a bang for your buck (or dwindling Dining Dollars balance):
