First thing's first: XIX just oozes class. From the low lighting to the $1,500 imported chairs to the sweeping view of Philadelphia's skyline, XIX is trying to make a reputation as the city's swankiest new downtown restaurant.

Let's be real, it's pretty hard to get real Cuban food in this town. However, nestled in the heart of North Philadelphia, Tierra Colombiana dishes out authentic Cuban food like none other.

Standing outside of most restaurants in Chinatown can be a tad disconcerting, and Szechuan Tasty House is no exception.

Merlot from Chile occupies that uneasy spot as the forgotten stepchild of the world wine scene. It doesn't come close to the pretension of France, with its rigorous distilleries and snotty accents. For your more patriotic types, you've got the hippies of Sonoma and Napa out west.

Usually the only way for a Penn student to score a chic meal is if Mummy and Daddy can be conned into going during NSO. If your parents are foolhardy enough to give you free reign over the city, you may just want to consider the newly opened Water Works Restaurant and Lounge for a truly upscale Philadelphia experience.

Dean* did the frat house thing all night with his entire hall, squeezing in between sweaty freshmen in order to get a precious red Solo cup filled with Natty Lite. Hailing from the West Coast, he was pretty pleased with the women at Penn, who seemed to look better and better as he got more beers under his belt. It was only midway through NSO, but he already had to sit through enough boring lectures and awkward socials to last a lifetime. It was his personal philosophy that it's always easier to meet people when you're a little wasted, and he was taking that mantra to heart tonight. As he stumbled from house to house with his hallmates, the fact that he just met them a couple days ago didn't seem like that big of a deal.

At first glance, nothing seems to be appealing about the new horror film Slither. In typical horror movie fashion, giant red slugs chase hapless South Carolina bumpkins up and down farm houses, through bathtubs, and other charming facets of small-town America. When a slug finally reaches its victim, the poor bastard turns into a staggering zombie intent on feasting on the flesh of the living...surprise surprise, right? And ostensibly, the movie has all of the makings of the most formulaic horror movie that ever reached the silver screen.

Love it or hate it, modern art stands boldly on the art scene, both in general and at Penn. In a city dominated by the Philadelphia Museum of Art, modern art must eke out its own existence from in between the likes of Cezanne and Winslow Homer. Despite its scant presence, modern art defiantly thumbs its nose from this side of the Schuylkill River via Penn's own Institute of Contemporary Art. From now until March 26, the ICA will continue to push the boundaries in its new exhibition "Gone Formalism," a display that explores and pushes the boundaries of artistic expression.

If there were any doubts on the legitimacy of "new American cuisine," let Chloe try to silence them. The quality of the food at this intimate little place was above and beyond any normal American bistro food, even though a few dull spots marred an otherwise superb meal.

The proprietors of Dessert realize the sorry state of American sweets and aim to combat the legacy of Hershey with nuanced dishes and an intimate bistro setting. Soft lighting illuminates the wine colored walls and deep mahogany furniture, while classic Sinatra floats through the air. Service is swift and the attention is personal, so even upon first entering Dessert, any visitor will feel right at home.

What makes small, independent theater worthwhile to visit, instead of going to a big-production Broadway costume musical? The mainstays of the Great White Way have their own merits, but independent theater offers a type of authenticity and humanity that eludes larger productions. In many smaller venues, actors can portray the trials and tribulations of real people with real emotions, while directors can ask us whether we see ourselves in these characters. Tape, TOW Theatre Company's current production at The Adrienne Theatre, exemplifies the intimacy of independent theater and the deeply affecting nature of realistic characters.

Doom, starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as Sarge and Karl Urban as John Grimm, promises very little from the onset -- and keeps its promise. The first 10 minutes involve monsters chasing down hapless civilians, soldiers wielding comically oversized guns and light glistening off of The Rock's shirtless back. This blueprint for space station mayhem plods along a highly predictable route, accentuated only by Mars-sized plot holes and undistinguishable stock characters like the nerdy scientist and the rookie.

Into the Blue, starring teen heartthrobs Paul Walker and Jessica Alba, pretty much unfolds as one would expect. Tanned treasure hunter Jared (Walker) cuddles with tanned beach gal Sam (Alba) on the shores of Barbados as the sun sets behind them. They become entangled in an island-wide conspiracy over the treasures from a lost plane, and must ultimately decide whether true love trumps gold doubloons. In the meantime, the duo must battle sharks, smugglers, and faulty equipment with the help of Jared's wisecracking brother Bryce (Scott Caan, Boiler Room).

It's that time of year again, when the disgusting, frightening and plain old spooky demons of the night come out of the woodwork to scare the bejesus out of us normal, well-adjusted citizens. Unfortunately for the typical over-inflated teenage machismo, most people shrink at the mere thought of ghosts, witches and other paranormal activity. Fortunately for the Eastern State Penitentiary, most Halloween enthusiasts are unrepentant masochists with a flair for the outrageous. More specifically, the annual haunt-fest "Terror Behind the Walls" is back with vengeance.
