It was lunchtime in middle school. The plastic brown tables were all lined up ready for the next group of students to take their seats, discuss their plan for the weekend, their recent Chemistry exam, and the rainy weather that forbidden them from playing outdoors.

Walking outside, it’s hard to tell it’s technically still winter. The sun is bright, with the temperature at a constant 50 degrees, and the air smells like spring. Even so, I am still feeling the negative effects of the season—being outside means dry hands and chapped lips. That's no good for Valentine's Day. Whether you've got a date planned with your significant other or you're just holding out hope for cupid to strike on Friday, your hopes for love will be dashed if your lips are too chapped to kiss. Here’s a special DIY lip balm you can make from the comfort of your own home that will keep your lips soft and ready for love.

At Penn, hearing the word “BYO” brings to mind establishments like Ken’s Seafood or Iztaccihuatl. For many students, the idea of a BYO restaurant doesn’t extend beyond the usual rowdy club or organization meeting meant for drunk bonding and less–than–average food. However, BYO restaurants can be much more than just a location for boat races, and can even make for a classy dinner. Here are some of the best BYO locations for any mood.

As the clocks turned to midnight on New Year’s Day, a new decade began, but it felt as though all anyone could talk about was the past. The “Roaring 20s”, the nickname for the 1920s decade, brings to mind lavish, Gatsby-esque lifestyles. Now a full century ago, the 20s also coincided with Prohibition, a time when alcohol was banned in the United States. In true fashion, Americans did what they could to get around this rule—enter speakeasies, elusive locations where people could drink and party in legally dubious settings. The locations were secret, giving them a cult of exclusivity and mystery that has stuck around today. Though the actual Prohibition is over, these speakeasies in Philadelphia can help you revisit the now century–old mindset.

With the 2019–2020 NFL season finally in full swing, I can’t help but long for home. Growing up, my father was relentless Giants fan, screaming through every touchdown, flag, and interception. The TV blared into the night every Thursday and Sunday as we ate various fried foods. Even as the stress of my junior year settled in, I could count on my dad to have all our family friends gathered around the living room, stuffing their faces with classic Mozzarella sticks, gooey nachos, and my mom’s famous homemade wings. Coming to college, I’ve lost the excitement that used to accompany football games. Beyond being scared to wear my Giants pride high, between coursework and clubs, I’ve run out of time to truly sit down and enjoy a proper game without being overwhelmed by stress.

As I perused the Olly’s online menu before my visit to the restaurant, I prepared my stomach for a hefty American meal. My fantasies included an epic cheese pull from a steamy plate of nachos, sinus–clearing from a plate of heavily flavored, saucy chicken wings, and, of course, a juicy bite of an all–American burger. These meals gave me the image of a slightly trashy dive bar, with flashing neon signs and a wall of cheap liquors.

The air was crisp and cool when I entered Jembatan 5 for an early dinner. The decor was simple yet inviting, the perfect shelter for a cool evening. With the warm lighting set upon us, rain began to pour outside, and our waitress, who doubled as the manager, came over to give us a run down of the menu. Her clear passion for food was visible in her descriptions of the items, referencing which dishes would represent Indonesian food the best.

The Fourth of July is fast approaching. But as Penn global opportunities are expanding, many students may find themselves miles away from anyone who cares about the United States' Independence Day. Beyond just an opportunity to get wasted with your friends or watch fireworks on the beach, the Fourth of July represents an important aspect of the American past and future: freedom. Especially given our country's political state, it is essential to remember where we came from, the ideas that have maintained the glory of this country, and the virtues we fight for everyday as a country. Alongside the historical value of this holiday, the Fourth July represents a homage to American culture that is worth its celebration every year.

The first time I heard the words “menstrual cup”, I’m pretty sure I gagged. At the time, the cup seemed so foreign, so unnecessary, and—to be frank—so gross. For some reason, I pictured the minuscule white cups used for ketchup at fast–food restaurants. However, underneath all my external disgust was an innate curiosity as to why so many people swear by using a menstrual cup.

The bright decor of Tony's Famous Tomato Pie pulled me in as an escape from the cold outdoors. I immediately felt as though I had been transported to a pit stop in the Midwest. Locals surrounded the bar—laughing while throwing back beer from the tap. The walls were covered in posters and exposed brick, and neon signs screamed "home–style bar". The hostess greeted us with a beaming smile, bringing over classic red plastic Coca–Cola cups. The vibe felt homey—we could have spent many hours there and not have even noticed.
