Thus “Blue Heaven,” according to artistic director Zach Blackwood, “is a kind of turn of phrase that means a place for us, a carved out space for me, a personal place. Blue Heaven is a place for all of us to feel safe and nasty."

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are often criticized for fueling the crazed consumeristic tendencies of Americans. These criticisms are valid, but shopping can be stressful—especially on a tight budget. Black Friday especially seems to add to this stress: every year we hear stories about people camping out in front of popular stores, wrestling over the latest piece of discounted technology, and going too far for a purchase. And rampant consumerism has environmental implications too—from the plastic waste that comes from packaging online orders to the unsustainable fast fashion industry.

The Gershman Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival, the second oldest Jewish film fest in the country, kicked off on Nov. 9. The festival was founded to, “educate and engage diverse Philadelphia communities, Jewish and non–Jewish alike, by presenting world–class film premieres, repertory cinema, and associated programs that are inspired by Jewish history, heritage, and values.”It will be taking place through Nov. 23.

“Are you a fan of Lord of the Rings?” Thomas Delfi asks. “I’ve actually been trying to focus less on European–based fantasy, and it’s partly because of this.” Delfi proceeds to explain that the tobacco pipe Gandalf the Grey smokes is made by the Hobbits. “Now here’s the problem,” Delfi proceeds matter–of–factly: “Tobacco was discovered and smoked in Latin America. It leaves out Latin Americans from one of the largest fantasy pop–culture novels of all time, while also taking away a bit from us.”

The brand—founded by two Penn alums—focuses exclusively on skincare, and aims to “take the facial out of the spa,” where services are extremely expensive, the environment is exclusive and uninviting, and communication between estheticians and clients is rare.

When Debra Goldstein, an environmental attorney, returned to Philadelphia from the Washington DC Environmental Film Festival, she knew she had to take action. “I thought, ‘someone needs to do something like this in Philly,’” she explains. “I realized that I needed to do that to make it happen.” Goldstein—who is now the passionate co-founder and executive director of the Philadelphia Environmental Film Festival—did just that.
