Gus Dapperton was at home at Union Transfer on Tuesday, Nov. 12. A former Drexel student, Dapperton’s performance in this redesigned farmers' market and factory felt like an easygoing college show. With his bowl cut, baseball hat, and baggy vintage sweatshirt, he’s as much of a peer as he is a performer. He’s Generation Z’s indie rock artist: a goofy guy with a 90’s–inspired look. Dapperton’s not there to put on a spectacle, but rather a fun and comfortable dance party.

Although his name may sound unfamiliar, Joe Thornalley, aka Vegyn, has contributed to two of the most influential albums of the decade: Frank Ocean’s Endless and Blonde (2016). You won’t hear Vegyn’s vocals anywhere, but his electronic beats helped shape these two albums. In addition to his creative collaborations with Frank Ocean, he’s been a co–host on the artist’s blonded RADIO show.

Last month, Frank Ocean released his single “DHL,” marking his first original track since dropping “Provider” in August 2017. This noteworthy release came just days after Frank Ocean announced he would be releasing two new singles, “Cayendo” and “Dear April” on vinyl through his website, Blonded.co. On his Youtube page, short clips were released of the two new singles being previewed at PrEP+, Frank’s new controversial queer nightclub in New York City.

Julia Jacklin didn’t always want to be a musician. Her most recent album, Crushing, has earned her six nominations for this year’s Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Music Awards, including Best Female Artist and Best Adult Contemporary Album.Even after years of working in music, though, Jacklin said to me over the phone, “It’s still strange to think of myself as being a musician for a living."

On Oct. 17, Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced Intersect, a festival that will take place on Dec. 6 and 7 at the Las Vegas Festival Grounds. Described as a place where “music, technology, and art converge,” Intersect’s lineup brings together top musicians from across several genres with headliners Kacey Musgraves, Beck, Foo Fighters, and Anderson.Paak & The Free Nationals. In the days following the announcement of this festival, musicians expressed outrage over Amazon’s involvement in the music festival due the company’s contracts with companies such as Palantir that provide the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE), and the Customs and Border Protection Agency (CBP) with software and other forms of technical support.

There’s a sense of mystery to Anna of the North. In 2014, she released her debut single “Sway” which became an internet sensation and was quickly remixed by the popular duo The Chainsmokers. In 2017, while working on her own debut album, she was featured on Tyler the Creator’s critically acclaimed album Flower Boy on the singles “Boredom” with Rex Orange County and “911 / Mr. Lonely” with Frank Ocean and Steve Lacy. Oakland singer-songwriter, multi–instrumentalist, and sole member of the band boy scouts Taylor Vick took time out of touring to talk about creating her latest album Free Company. Originally, a solo performer, Vick is now backed by a full band. The result of this new direction for the artist is a carefully constructed empathetic album that still maintains the core of her folksy, DIY sound. Her music is characterized by short, simple lines layered over instrumentals that come together to form dreamy, comforting songs. Before she performs in Philadelphia at the Foundry on Tuesday, Oct. 29 opening for Jay Som, I had the opportunity to talk to Vick:

Angel Olsen is the master of the angsty anthem. With unrestrained vocals and heavy guitar chords, she’s like a one–woman rock band. That energy and fury is back on her latest album, All Mirrors. Tempered with harmonious string arrangements and, at times, poppy synths, it’s an unexpected album that still maintains the confident vocals and honest lyricism of songs like “Unfucktheworld” and “Shut Up Kiss Me” that earned the artist her devoted following and critical acclaim.

Five months ago, Brooklyn band Big Thief released the critically–acclaimed album U.F.O.F., which Pitchfork named not only one of the best albums of the year, but also one of the best of the entire decade. Now, Big Thief is already back with a new album titled Two Hands, recorded in the desert outside of El Paso just days after U.F.O.F. had been completed in the forests of Washington. While U.F.O.F is lush, surreal, and psychedelic, Two Hands is a different companion—raw, dark and unguarded.

There was a chill in the air as the stage crew set up for the Maggie Rogers concert outside at Philadelphia’s Mann Center. Concert–goers filled the lawn with thick blankets, warm sweaters and wool caps. After weeks of thick, warm humidity, fall was finally here on the first Friday of October. Wrapping up the second leg of her late summer Heard It in a Past Life tour there’s a feeling of the need to soak in every second of the moment as colder days come in and the tour comes to an end. There are rules to attending orchestra concerts. An expectation for dead silence during and in between movements. No coughing, speaking, or cheering. Formal and modest clothing. A stark opposite to what it’s like to usually attend a typical concert. With this cold atmosphere, it’s understandable why people, especially young adults, are often uninterested in attending orchestra concerts. It fills our headphones when we study, before we fall asleep, or maybe as we’re heading to class, but it’s not a form of music that is seen live.

On Oct. 19, Sabrina Claudio's warm and sultry vocals will fill the Fillmore Philadelphia just days after the release of her upcoming album, "Truth Is". A rising star, Sabrina Claudio makes music that feels like a sweet return to old school R&B. Hulu’s Catch-22 is a show that is impossible to look away from. In the opening scene, viewers watch John Yossarian, U.S. Army bombardier, wanders dazed, naked and covered in blood on a combat airplane runway. An adaption of Joseph Heller’s 1961 satirical World War II novel of the same name, this mini–series portrays the absurdities of war and military life through graphic scenes and paradoxes. Written by Luke Davies and David Michôd, and directed by George Clooney, Grant Heslov, and Ellen Kuras, this star-studded show based on a literary classic meets its lofty ambitions.

After three immensely successful mixtapes and three Grammy awards, it’s hard to believe that Chance the Rapper (Chancelor Bennett) has not released a debut album until now. He’s reached a level of success that very few independent artists can achieve. With large artistic freedom, he’s created unique, uplifting rap heavily influenced by jazz and gospel, accumulating close personal and professional ties with some of the biggest rap stars in the process. Given his artistic and commercial success, his debut album The Big Day is long–awaited, highly–anticipated and appropriately titled. On these twenty–two tracks, Chance has set out to deliver a musical marathon that will have a little something for everyone.

When the original animated Lion King was released in 1994, it quickly became one of the highest-grossing animated films in the world and an integral part of many childhoods. A product of the "Disney Renaissance,” the Lion King was widely praised for its storyline, animation and music. Whenever I watch the original animated film, I'm in awe of the opening scene featuring the animals of the Serengeti set to the powerful “The Circle of Life.” It’s no surprise that the creators behind the impressive soundtrack are some of the best musical masterminds of our time: composer Elton John, lyricist Tim Rice and film score composer Hans Zimmer.

In the movie Yesterday, Jack Malik (Himesh Patel) is hit by a bus during an unexplainable 12–second world–wide power outage and wakes up to find that everyone around him no longer remembers one of the greatest bands of all time. As a failing musician, Malik seizes this opportunity to write down and perform all the greatest Beatles hits that he can remember.

In case you've been slacking on music news as of late, Lil Nas X's “Old Town Road” is among the longest–leading Billboard Hot 100 Number 1 songs. Since Billboard’s inaugural 1958 chart, just 3 percent of all Hot 100 Number 1 songs have led for 10 weeks or more—and, as of press time, "Old Town Road" has been on top for 12 weeks in counting. Thanks to this achievement, the 20–year–old rapper has ascended to the level of artists like Justin Bieber and Boys II Men. His meteoric, independent success raises questions about the role of virality and the interplay between social media and industry acceptance.
