When it came to determining the album of the year, Street Beats were up in arms about everything except for one thing: it wasn't Reputation by Taylor Swift. But that's as far as we got in crowning the best of 2017. Baby steps.

Everyone and their grandmother either is gluten–free, has tried being gluten–free, or has thought about being gluten–free. Heck, you’re probably reading this article because you’ve got gluten on the brain. Gluten’s been hailed as the demon behind all your problems: it’s the reason you can’t lose five pounds, it’s why a certain someone isn't replying to your Snaps, and why you haven’t found a summer internship for two years from now.

This Philly indie rock, ambient, bordering–on–Americana band fronted by Adam Granduciel dropped what was a near unanimously–acclaimed “masterpiece” of an album, Lost in the Dream, back in the summer of 2014. Now on to their fourth album, the band’s grown in fame, fans (think the likes of me, my mom, Larry Fink—CEO of BlackRock for all you non–Whartonites, The New Yorker, and Jimmy Kimmel) and, most notably, talent. Even Jimmy Iovine, of Beats and The Defiant Ones fame, said that the War on Drugs should be “gigantic". What once was a Bob Dylan–esque rock group has now transformed into a larger–than–life ambient, ethereal and guitar–infused aural experience, that also may or may not be changing the tide of rock music as we know it. That distinct sound surfaced in Lost in the Dream, only to be expanded and perfected in A Deeper Understanding.

Streaming is a touchy subject here at Street Music. There are those among us who'll be on Spotify until they die, some who have hopped on the Apple Music bandwagon, and others who have made the switch. Street Beats Paul Litwin and Noah Kest explained the pros and cons of their favorite streaming services.

Friday. The day when most are basking in the laziness that’s made possible by a weekday without class. It’s when brunch, Netflix and later–than–noon wake–ups reign supreme. Sounds like the life, no?

...They form a band, start a movement, and change the world with spiritually–loaded, (mostly) wordless jams. Last Saturday night, Zusha graced Philly’s most underrated venue, Harnwell Rooftop Lounge, with their holy presence while Penn’s Orthodox Jewish Community brought the Christmas lights for an evening of soulful tunes, spirituality and sick views. I’ll be honest, it “mamash (truly) changed my life"—but more on that later.

As most good things do, dream pop first evolved in the '80s in the UK. The likes of the Cocteau Twins and My Bloody Valentine spearheaded the movement away from rock 'n' roll by taking cues from shoegaze and crossing over to a more ethereal pop. Experimenting with white noise and guitars did the trick to create this shimmering success of a genre.

You’re back from spring break and, let’s face it, getting back on the grind is proving way harder than you thought. Then you’re crossing on Walnut and a car drives through a puddle and splashes you head on. It hits you: shit like this only happens to you. Now, you’re really feeling down—it’s just you, your endless workload and your wet socks. Even though nobody says this, a certain lo–fi rock singer/songwriter’s proven that this should be a thing: when it rains, write a song about it.

Between new names and familiar faces, the New Year in music is looking so far, so good. We're getting hyped for sophomore albums from the 1975 and Porches., the debut of former Smith Westerns frontman Cullen Omori, and more from the electro–pop goddess that is Elohim.
