Fist of God, the second LP from punk bassist-turned-electro house DJ Jesse F. Keeler and cohort Al-P, is an attempt at creating a cohesive dance record. Unfortunately for MSTRKRFT, any fluidity here can be attributed to the fact that every song sounds just about the same from start to finish. It lacks the mastery of the tension and release that characterizes good dance records. With generic beats and synth pulses, the album is reminiscent of ‘90s techno and leaves the listener longing for the gritty catchiness of MSTRKRFT’s first album. Most of the guest appearances feel out of place here, as though these parts were recorded before the rest of the song. Ghostface Killah’s contribution to “Word Up” does not even fit the beat. One exception, and really the only track with repeat listening quality, is “Heartbreaker,” featuring Penn alum John Legend.
