Organic fanatics no longer have to fret about finding quality produce from nearby markets. Foodies who scour the aisles of FroGro and travel downtown to Whole Foods now have an organic oasis only a few blocks from Beige. Milk & Honey, a new local organic market and café located at 44th and Baltimore, provides a new place to shop (and study!) for this growing niche of students.

The market boasts locally grown produce and the café serves signature sandwiches, cupcakes and pastries. The most popular baked item, the honey spice cupcake ($2.50), usually sells out by 3 p.m. and features a honeybee made of pure organic honey atop a whipped honey buttercream frosting. Vegetarian ($5.50) and meat ($6.50) sandwiches are the other favorites on M&H’s menu. These Italian inspired sandwiches often contain Italian cured meats, prosciutto di Parma, hot and sweet copa (cured pork), sopressatta, salami and pepperoni (from Claudio Specialty Foods). The organic chicken soup ($4.50 for 12 oz) will surely offer you a taste of home.

For a quick study break, try a large organic hot chocolate ($2.50) or a freshly squeezed orange juice ($3.50), or sample a variety of cookies (50 cents each). Recharging for a long day’s work never tasted so good.

Milk & Honey prides itself on being the food oasis of the “locavores;” nothing drives or even flies long distances to reach the M&H shelves. Metropolitan Bakery bread, Bassett’s Ice Cream and Old City Coffee are among a few of the local distributors.

With its local vibe and study-friendly barstools and tables, Milk & Honey makes eating sustainably and healthily easier than ever.
