Not every song is an instant classic. Some tracks take time to build up momentum, slowly seducing listeners and gaining recognition. “Hey Hey” is one such song. Released in November, it swiftly flew under the radar of most house heads until last month’s Winter Music Conference. Now, however, “Hey Hey” is poised to become the summer’s breakout anthem. The beat is startling in its simplicity, starting off with an ominous, pulsating synth and a stream of quiet snares. The vocals, too, are rather unassuming at first – until the bridge, that is. Invoking a Crystal Waters-esque brand of 90s diva, vocalist Vivien Goldman belts out an unexpectedly soulful chorus, peppered with Ferrer’s own “hey hey” chants.

From that first chorus on, everything changes. Ferrer adds a metallic, warehousey layer of kicks, arrestingly powerful in concert with Goldman’s all-too-brief brief scatting section. Though “Hey Hey” starts off like any other dance track, a full listen will show that it’s much more; Ferrer’s artful production will afford the song staying power akin to that of, say, “Love Generation.” Simply put, this track isn’t going anywhere, and we couldn’t be happier about it.
