Honest Tom’s Taco Shop is just far enough from the center of campus for it to be off most students’ radars. Located right next to Clark Park on 43rd and Chester streets on Saturdays (its location changes throughout the week — see below), Honest Tom’s truck is painted very brightly, immediately evoking a hybrid of the Electric Kool Aid Acid Test but vivid Mexican artwork. Inside the truck are three chill dudes — the type you’d expect to find in a brightly painted van.
On Saturdays, Honest Tom's exclusively serves breakfast, and their menu is limited, but in a good way. Your only choice is between the veggie taco ($2.50) and the renaissance sausage taco ($3), with room to add on some homemade lemonade ($1.50). The tacos themselves are pretty delicious, made so by the freshness of their ingredients. This is, of course, an interesting change of pace when it comes to consuming food prepared in vans. The renaissance sausage taco has perfectly–seasoned chorizo and is topped with cheese, eggs, salsa and a generous scoop of guacamole. The guacamole is surprisingly good, and blows Chipotle’s guacamole out of the water (as most guacamoles do).
Your other option is the veggie taco, which is by no means a cop–out: it subs out the sausage for some delectable potatoes. For their tacos, Honest Tom’s thankfully uses browned tortillas, a strategy that the well–loved campus fixture Coup de Taco would be wise to adopt. On the whole, their tacos’ lack of variety is more than made up for by their above–average flavor and freshness. The homemade lemonade is a welcome addition to the spiced meal, but is a bit overly sweetened when consumed on its own.
Actually making your way to Honest Tom’s, though, is somewhat arduous. While their Saturday morning breakfast tacos are undeniably good, the 15–20 minute walk from most campus dwellings may sway you to pursue more accessible options. Like most food trucks, Honest Tom’s is best treated not as a destination but as a fulfilling checkpoint on your daily path. The truck changes positions throughout the week, making trips to Drexel's campus (33rd and Arch streets) and Center City (18th and Vine streets). It seems like a stretch to walk a good distance from the center of campus for tacos like these when you could just settle for a slightly–less–satisfying food truck that's a lot closer to where you live. In general, Honest Tom's seems like a solid option for anyone who lives near it.
