Ask Ego: What is the party scene like after NSO?

Q: What's the party scene like after NSO?  I care about my studies, but I also want a few crazy nights here and there.

A: After your first night at Penn, you will probably have the impression that the whole "Ivy League" shtick is an elaborate charade and that you actually go to school exclusively with alcohol–poisoned primates. But trust us — the same guy double–fisting condoms and glow sticks outside of Allegro's at 3 a.m. will be kicking your ass during 8 a.m. recitation once classes begin.

We hate to perpetuate the "work hard, play hard" motto, but it accurately sums up social life for a huge number of individuals at Penn. That said, you'll be hard-pressed to find anyone who prioritizes partying over academics. NSO and Spring Fling are the two biggest social events at Penn, and are ridiculously hyped because for most people, they bookend a busy and challenging academic year.

The difference between NSO and the rest of the year is that for five days, every frat on campus is throwing a party. Let us emphasize: THIS IS NOT TYPICAL. After NSO, the parties will mostly be confined to weekends, and there likely won't be more than two or three large-scale ragers per week. The great thing about Penn is that, come the weekend (and the weekend starts around Tuesday for some), there are always going to be people looking for a crazy night. But there will be just as many who would rather stay in and take it easy.
