Nestled on the corner of 22nd and South, My Thai is a romantic little restaurant that serves authentic and flavorful Thai fare.

Husband and wife team "Idd" and "Sud" created My Thai 14 years ago when the Philadelphia area was home to only two Thai restaurants. Today, Philadelphia has over 20 restaurants specializing in Thai cuisine, but Idd promises that My Thai -- relatively unchanged over the years -- has a menu unparalleled by other Thai restaurants. Idd maintains that the secret to holding your own in a saturated market is "having menu items that no one else has."

Thus, Sud, Idd's wife, created My Thai's unique My Thai soup. A Thai version of an American classic, this tomato-based soup is blended with cod fish and coconut curry and topped with homemade garlic croutons and scallions. It is an excellent choice for an appetizer and a reasonable $4. Inspired by his wife's creation, Idd decided to design a Thai version of an old favorite, pizza. The result is a neighborhood favorite and is made of a pizza crust topped with chicken, garlic, mushrooms, peanut sauce, tomatoes and mozzarella cheese.

If you prefer more traditional menu items, the Thai curry pot (gang ped) gives you a choice of chicken or beef with red curry, coconut milk, eggplant and bamboo shoots. Each dish of Thai curry is made individually to order and can be made as spicy or as mild as you prefer. Also, in most dishes meat can be substituted for tofu and fresh vegetables. The panang shrimp is another popular classic, comprised of saut‚ed shrimp with spicy peanut, lime leaf and coconut curry. Idd also recommends all of the stir fried dishes, especially the him-ma-pan shrimp and chicken with cashew nuts, onions, bell pepper and baby corn in a roasted chili. The entrees range in price from $10 to $15.

If you have room for more after finishing your meal, Sud and Idd make a variety of homemade Thai and American desserts. Favorites include pumpkin custard, crepes filled with sweet cream, sticky rice and ice cream. The homemade ginger and coconut ice creams are truly exquisite.

My Thai is a delightful dinner spot with an extensive, reasonably priced menu and a charming staff.
