In the heart of charming Old City lies a store that sells the most ridiculously trendy clothes that would leave even President Gutmann breathless. Street went down and surveyed the goods for ourselves.

Near the intersection of 2nd and Market, in an area of Philly probably best known on Penn's campus for its trendy nightclubs and bistros, Charlie's Jeans takes up a narrow, unassuming storefront. A slightly less-hyped Smith Brothers' protege, this small boutique carries all the standard brands: Citizens of Humanity, AG, Mavi and a great selection of Paper Denim & Cloth's. When buying jeans, the staff is more than helpful, although not necessarily that discerning when it comes to deciding between different fits. When it's time to fill your closet with jeans, however, the store manages to provide the basics: a wide variety of cuts and washes, a small dressing room and no fuss.

Also for sale is a variety of tops, including basics like James Perse and dressier blouses from Laundry. Charlie's also hosts an impressive selection of Theory blazers, a rarer commodity in Philly than in New York, Chicago or LA. Theory always has a great tailored look that makes its offerings a fall closet essential.

Beyond that, there is nothing to be found at Charlie's Jeans that couldn't be found at any similar establishment. The area doesn't boast a wide variety of boutiques, but interestingly a smaller Smith Brothers is a few doors down, and the two seem to almost cancel each other out. If you're in the area for a posh late lunch, stop in for a quick run through, but don't take time to make the trip this far downtown for this boutique alone -- you'd be much better off staying in Rittenhouse.
