If you’re confused by An Horse’s non-traditional use of the article you’re not alone. One can only assume that this is how drum and guitar duo Kate Cooper and Damon Cox discuss their equine escorts in thick Australian accents when they’re throwing shrimp on the barbie back in their hometown of Brisbane. The group’s first LP, Rearrange Beds, features guitar work by Cooper laden with jangling, Kinks-style bar chords and lyrics that are both easy to pick up and to throw away. The two things that help An Horse stand out from the milieu of MySpace-driven overnight sensations are Cox’s sparse, aggressive drumming and Cooper’s crooning; a little bit pissed, a little bit wounded and ultimately a lot of fun to sing along to. The tight, catchy synergy between Cooper and Cox is reminiscent of a less doe-eyed version of husband and wife duo Mates of State.
