At first, you might think consequential is just another way of saying important. After all, the exhibition shows works from over 30 of PennDesign’s prestigious faculty, and that seems pretty important. But as the title of an exhibition dripping in artistic nuances, the word has another meaning. Consequential also means “of the nature of a secondary result,” or “indirect.” The focus is to show the link between an artist’s original conceptions of his or her piece to its final, concrete form.

The gallery includes supporting source material integral to the individualized processes of each artist, like preliminary sketches, depictions of working studios and various stages of completion for a project. And probably the best part? You have a great excuse to walk through the gate that looks like it’s speaking sign language. Plus, the Charles Addams Gallery, newly renovated and the first permanent home for the fine arts at Penn, is worth checking out for its impressive glass walls and light, airy interior alone.
