Barbie's pride and joy The Room: Pink: the one word that immediately comes to mind when you enter this Fisher-Hassenfeld single. It might be the fluffy, fuschia shag carpet, the pink rhinestone stapler or even the “California Princess” license plate — but the entire room screams Legally Blond. Other not-so-subtle touches include a dizzying array of polka dots: decorations, bed sheets and giant, pink, polka dot posters. As Courtney Albini, the room's owner, so eloquently admits, her room is “obsessively pink.” It evokes nostalgia for the days when Barbie was more common than OCR. Get the Look: L.A. style hub Kitson, or any store flaunting shiny pink accessories in the window-display. Quick Tip: In order to achieve the frilly look, pink is a necessity, but if for some reason a pink accessory cannot be found, buy anything shiny and rhinestone infused. —Maddie Shiff

Masculine minimalism The Room: Walking into the off-campus house on Locust, you can’t help but feel like you’re walking into an after-hours lounge. If the drum set, keyboard, saxophone, scattered guitars and bass don’t make it clear enough, the newly installed PA system just might. Myles Karp's room in particular emphasizes the grungy frat-boy quality. His pad earns the title of manliest man-cave. Featuring the most basic of furniture and the overwhelmingly neutral backdrop, the room maintains a semi-streamlined aesthetic — despite the unavoidable clutter. Above the bed, colorful oriental rugs hang to help break up the otherwise empty walls. It’s dude decor: simplicity trumps all. Get the Look: Pair your standard off-white walls with neutral curtains to set the stage. For pop, top off the look with a medley of rugs, posters and easily obtained Urban Outfitters tchotchkes. Quick Tip: With this style, pretty much all things go. Whatever your tastes — high or low — make sure everyone knows it by highlighting your favorite pieces or objects. —Terner Papir

Hippie haven The Room: This sprawling off-campus room seems a bit intimidating at first glance. But the larger-than-life space has been converted into a hippie chic hangout for friends of Katie Goldrath. A lover of music and culture, she’s adorned her walls with a Bonnaroo tapestry, paintings and, of course, a Woodstock poster. A quilted comforter ties together the crimson couch, while dark furniture bring the room’s focus to the center. But no modern hippie pad is complete without some classic tie-dye. A massive flat screen TV pokes through a tie-dyed tapestry that once hung from the ceiling of Goldrath’s scrunched Hill double. Get the Look: Philadelphia’s Wonderland has an extensive selection of tapestries. Quick Tip: Hang a poster of your favorite musician from the seventies. —Jessica Goodman

Island getaway The Room: Your after-hours locale should be an oasis to call home — and that’s just what College senior Meg York has created in her beachy-chic getaway. The calming white curtains and streamlined furniture tie together the overall calmness of the room, leaving the main focal point — a giant palm tree and beach scene mural spanning one of the walls — to capture the scene. But the pulled-together decorating doesn’t stop there; the small details complete the overall look. A bowl of carefully arranged sea shells, a hanging trio of leis and a bright leafy plant help the room evoke the feng shui of an upscale spa or resort. Along the mantle a cluster of photos, hung whimsically, form the backdrop for a set of soothing candles and daintily displayed makeup brushes. With this room’s array of beachy touches, you’ll only leave dreaming of spring break, Pina Coladas and warmer weather. Get the Look: Since most off-campus landlords hate on paint, head to muralsyourway.com to order a customized vinyl mural for a temporary splash of color. Quick Tip: College kids don’t need to go crazy on expensive room accessories. Sometimes all it takes is a unique piece — like a collection of shells or a bright plant — to complete the look. —Maggie Rusch
