As the weather gets warmer, we grow weary for a refreshed summer wardrobe. So do you turn to Aritzia and Reformation? Or someplace less expensive, maybe Brandy Melville or even Shein? We can do better. After all, there is such an enormous quantity of clothing already in circulation; when it comes to everyday clothing, there is little use in buying new. So, thrift!
Whether it’s the excitement of the search, low prices, or environmental perks, thrifting comes with innumerable benefits. On top of that, you get to have items in your wardrobe that nobody else has, all while supporting small businesses or charities—how cool is that?
But where do you go? Do you prefer more curated stores, or free–for–alls? Interested in clothes or accessories? Street has got your back! Here’s an in depth review of the five thrift stores closest to campus.
After venturing to each store, I ranked them on clothing items (including jewelry and accessories), non–clothing items, pricing, and overall experience. Though this is not an extremely linear nor formulaic system in any way, it should give you a pretty good basis.
Buffalo Exchange
1520 Chestnut St.
Clothing items: Fair
Non–clothing items: N/A
Pricing: Fair
Overall experience: Fair
Buffalo Exchange is the definition of hit or miss. Though my friends and I are seldom successful in the clothing section, the accessories are the savior of this store—they shine through the dull atmosphere. I did manage to find one of my favorite purses at this store, but that is the only thing I have ever purchased here. But unless you are an accessories fan or just happen to be in the area, do not go out of your way to check out Buffalo Exchange.
2nd STREET
1606 Chestnut St.
501 South St.
Clothing items: Good
Non–clothing items: N/A
Pricing: Good
Overall experience: Good
With two easily accessible locations, 2nd STREET is definitely worth stopping in. They have a range of items, from inexpensive pieces to nicer “vintage” items (which often cost more than I would like to spend thrifting). The selection feels quite curated—though for who, it is unclear. The clothing here will definitely push you out of your comfort zone—for the better or for the worse, it is up to you to decide.
Goodwill
5050 Parkside Ave.
Clothing items: Great
Non–clothing items: Good
Pricing: Good
Overall experience: Good
Goodwill is truly a classic. Inexpensive and expansive, this store is only a bus ride away. Though you will spend lots of time sifting through junk, there is a high chance of finding a gem. I have an affinity for high inventory stores such as Goodwill, because I am guaranteed to find something salvageable via sewing machine. This time, I was able to find several tops, no alterations needed, and a pair of jeans with fun embroidery on the back pockets.
Philly AIDS Thrift
710 S 5th St.
Clothing items: Good
Non–clothing items: Excellent
Pricing: Good
Overall experience: Great
This store is honestly the coolest place to look around. It is two floors of innumerable rooms filled with everything under the sun, from dollar clothing bins to furniture to tons of home decor and tchotchkes. Though I have never found clothing for myself at Philly AIDS, I always leave with a trinket or some jewelry. This time, I bought an old doll for four dollars. But the experience of the store is reason enough to go—I mean, there was a fake foot protruding from the ceiling. As a bonus, the store’s proceeds are donated to local organizations involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS. And if you’re in the area, make sure to stop by Repo Records, one of Philly’s best record stores.
Second Mile Center
214 S 45th St.
Clothing items: Excellent
Non–clothing items: Fair
Pricing: Excellent
Overall experience: Fabulous
Every time I go to Second Mile, I am guaranteed to leave with items that I am obsessed with, shocked by their low price. I have found some of the best pieces, from a fluffy cheetah print jacket (featured in some of these pictures) to black lacy Guess heels, to sheer layering tops, all for extremely reasonable prices. Make sure you take enough time to comb through the entire store, especially all of the shoes. There is always some sale going on, and on Fridays there is a student discount. On top of that, the employees could not be kinder!
