ROOM: Nobody Likes Tuscan Eggplants Anymore

Room: Ware 229

Cohabitants: Hsiao-Ying Chin of Brooklyn and Lori White of St. Louis, College freshmen

Do you want some Pez?

Lori: Sure

Hsiao-Ying: No. I just put gum in my mouth. It's not like I really like gum. I am not one of those people who are always like, "Do you have gum? Shit."

Who is responsible for that scarf on the fan?

Lori: I am. [The scarf] kind of reminds me of burning desire.

How do you feel about St. Louis' being called the new "Dirty South?"

Lori: St. Louis isn't in the South. Midwest.... I like St. Louis. I lived outside of St. Louis in the suburbs where there were only Presbyterians.

Is there a Presbyterian influence on the room's d‚cor?

Lori: The d‚cor was not influenced by Presbyterians.

Hsiao-Ying: No religious affiliations.

When you say no religious affiliation, does that mean this room isn't spiritual?

Lori: Oh it's spiritual. I was going crazy because my room wasn't organized. I had to get my stuff up. I needed to create my space--the "Lori." I am comfortable now that I am surrounded by me. I needed to create "Lori." I am Lori. This is Lori. This is Lori.

Powerpuff girl pillows?

Lori: The Powerpuff girls are not really a statement. They're colorful. They're spunky. They're cartoons. I am just getting back into cartoons. I really got into Johnny Bravo because he reminds me of this guy that I used to swing dance with a lot.

Swing dancing?

Hsiao-Ying: She thinks the men here [in Philadelphia] can't dance

Lori: They lead like girls.... I can show you some of my dresses. This one isn't too bad. It's my most expensive. $98. I have two different types of sailor pants. They're a must.

They're a must?

Lori: An absolute must.

Did you make a conscious decision to have pink sheets on both of your beds?

Hsiao-Ying: No.... When we were young, we weren't allowed to like pink. But pink is back.

Lori: Pink was the new black three years ago.

If you could characterize your room as a vegetable, what would it be?

Lori: A Tuscan eggplant.

Hsiao-Ying: A watermelon. It's really big.

Watermelon isn't a vegetable.

Hsiao-Ying: Well, nobody likes vegetables anymore.
