The Mexican Post 104 Chestnut Street 215-923-5233

After getting the once-over for failing to conform to the yuppie, monochrome, slick standard of style at the last bar I went to, it was quite a relief to wear jeans to Old City's Mexican Post and be allowed to have a seat without any resistance. Well, maybe the word seat is a stretch in this push-and-shove-your-way-to-the-bar environment, but at least I was allowed in the door. Loud and with a crowd who loves it, the atmosphere is warm and festive, albeit with drunken good cheer. The mob at the bar is both young and old, and the "Oh my God, Heather, so, like, at this party last night..." conversation competes in volume with the after work relaxation "Man, the Yankees suck" chatter. As for the potables, my suggestion would be the potent strawberry margarita, but several other fruity flavors are available, in either the pitcher or glass variety. Warm chips and fresh salsa make a spicy and welcome complement if you can manage to find some space to set the basket. And be sure to check out the jukebox to make your selections soon after arrival--the variety is worthy but chances are the wait to hear your sing-along song may be a while.
