Charlie Hunter Quartet w/Robert Walters 20th Congress
Trocadero Theatre
1003 Arch St.
November 4
8 p.m. doors, $14
(215) 922-LIVE
Blah, Blah, Blah. If you complain about the monotony of fraternity parties, and the most culture you've experienced at Penn is the occasional trip to Beijing, then Charlie Hunter is the concert to see. Hunter is a musical virtuoso who plays both the bass and lead on his 12-string guitar. The musical virtuoso combines with his quartet to provide a musical delicacy of songs that begin relaxed and build into complicated dramas. Hunter's performance will make you wonder if people have limits on talent and enable you to tell your friends that you didn't spend Saturday night getting intimate with a toilet. The Charlie Hunter experience will put you in touch with the evolving jazz scene, and you can drop his name as if you know more about music beyond the latest Britney Spears single. If you still want to meet fraternity guys and binge drink, let me remind you that the Charlie Hunter concert is perfect for a date. He plays lengthy songs which will ease the pressing need to converse, and your date will be impressed with your choice of music. Oh, yeah.
Man or AstroMan?
The Khyber

An excellent question indeed. We're tempted to say astroman. Yeah, definitely astroman. Reason would seem to indicate that if you can fly you have a pretty good advantage in a fight. If astroman consistently stepped on man's head, man would probably go down pretty fast. We know what you're thinking; how do we know astroman can fly? Well, first of all, don't ask stupid questions... he's astroman. And besides, when have we ever let you down before? Sure, we've given no indication that this is a listing for a band's show, but we pride ourselves on going above and beyond our calling. So you can do what you want, but we've got our money on astroman in a landslide.
Cesaria Evora

What a fabulous name. All the way from the Portuguese islands of Cape Verde, Cesaria Evora is gracing our presence with her sultry and whimsical vocals. This barefoot diva's musical influences are as diverse as the culture she comes from and should be a nice treat to all of those familiar with both Latin American and African music. Yeah Portugal!
