Those who weren’t lucky enough to make an early exit for fall break eschewed their typical Thursday night pseudo-Greek nightclub pick in favor of the best dance party of the semester: Girl Talk’s tour kickoff at the Starlight Ballroom. PiLam hipsters mixed with fratacular bros and hos at a show that was so Penn-heavy one can only hope SPEC takes a cue. The sweaty dancefest was practically seamless until it was interrupted by Gregg Gillis himself, as he implored two particularly rowdy Betas to get off the speakers and join the rest of the onstage mob. If moshing wasn’t your thing, the roller rink-style floor promised plenty of American Apparel-clad scenesters bumping and grinding to Gillis’s outrageous mash-ups. Relying heavily on reworkings of Feed the Animals, the eclectic crowd ate it up. Which was good, seeing as those who couldn't break the fast in the comfort of their own homes ended their Day of Atonement with a healthy dose of vodka and synth. While old school fans may have lamented Girl Talk’s crossover to the mainstream and sorority chicks complained about the grungy crowd, we can only describe the meeting of Penn’s favorite subcultures screaming, “I love having sex but I’d rather get some head!” as… magical. Well played, Gregg. Just make sure to crank the AC next time.
