Guilty Pleasures: Saves the Day, "Through Being Cool" (1999)

Maybe big boys don’t cry, but this week has left me dwelling on the long-gone days of puppy love and unanswered Disney Valentines. The squeaky voice of Saves the Day’s Chris Conley was my pre-millennial post-pubescent soundtrack, playing in my room after I got dumped at the roller rink. And the homecoming game. And the spring dance.

Its tough to admit how much lyrics like “I’m having a bad week, I miss my mom,” still resonate, but Through Being Cool makes depression sound pretty damn catchy. Saves the Day was the band with the balls to admit they had Mom on speed dial, even if it meant getting beaten up for it.

Listening to Through Being Cool may mean that you were never that cool to begin with, but that won't stop me from playing it on repeat this Valentine's Day, singing along between long swigs of bourbon.
