This Thursday, the Philly Improv Theatre will become a boxing ring for two dueling comedy troupes. CAGEMATCH pits returning champion trio “The Ones Your Mother Warned You About” against PHIT instructor Matt Holmes, who will pick an audience member to join him up on stage. While it probably won’t be a bloodbath, the performance is sure to illicit some side-splitting laughter from the audience - augmented by the element of suspense. Come with a sense of adventure, because it could be you who joins the cast Thursday August 5, 9:30 p.m. ($10)
If you attended last Saturday's Mad Decent Block Party, Diplo’s probably already won your favor. This Friday let him wow you again with his first film, Favela on Blast, screening at the International House for one night only. The documentary examines the hottest musical phenomenon to come out of the Brazilian slums: Baile Funk, a cross between indigenous rhythms and imported hip-hop styles – and of course isn’t without its fair share of social commentary. We guarantee it’ll be an eye-opener, but one filled with bumping beats and vibrant streets. Friday August 6, 7:00 p.m. ($5 - $8)
This weekend the Rotunda will play host to some of the best local artists and storytellers for the Philly Alt Comic Con. The convention’s focus is on independent talent: up-and-comers whose unique styles don't conform to the sleek contours of conventional superhero strips. If you pay $10 at the door, you’ll get a complimentary PACC anthology, with contributions from Bellen! creator Box Brown and Ian Harker, whose Secret Prison 2 will make its debut at PACC. Be sure to hit up the after-party at our neighborhood comic shop, event sponsor Locust Moon. Sunday August 8, 12:00 p.m. ($3 - $10)
