The Tower Theatre, located at the corner of 69th and Ludlow streets, was constructed in 1927 as a movie house and vaudeville theater. Despite its proximity to campus, Penn students frequent the 3,119–capacity theatre less than other venues in the Philadelphia area — such as the Electric Factory or the TLA, both of which draw out large crowds of Quakers on a weekly basis.

For those who have never visited the theater, finding it in Upper Darby should not be a problem. The display is visible from blocks away, as a lofty statue of a radio tower is perched on top of the roof. The building’s exterior possesses a quaint, old–town charm, with a dimly lit wrap–around marquee lining the faded concrete exterior. The word “tower” sits atop the marquee in big, red letters, illuminated by a network of tiny LED lights.

A gothic–esque architectural style is noticeable inside the theater, with grand staircases leading up to the balcony and marble columns lining the rows of seats. The spacious design of the theater results in top–notch acoustics for performances, while the aesthetic interior provides a first–class viewing experience for all patrons.

The Tower’s reserved seating system may dissuade those mosh pit–craving individuals from attending shows. However, those who can live without the exhilaration and chaos of general admission will find the theatre to be a comfortable atmosphere for the dozens of great bands that cycle through the venue every year.
