Review: "Lightning" — Matt & Kim

“Some things are better with age / some things no longer remain,” belts out Matt Johnson of indie pop duo Matt & Kim on “Now,” a song from their newest album. The line is strikingly apt in characterizing the work as a whole. This album is an anthem to embracing change, and the group has done just that with “Lightning.” While still delivering feel-good, head-bopping tunes, Matt & Kim have partially shed their bubblegum pop sound for unapologetic attitude. Instead of detracting from the music, this embellishes it. The sharp driving synth, the pounding drums and the curt lyrics blend together to form a lighthearted but purposeful message, as if Matt & Kim are saying, “We’re having fun whether you like it or not!” It is this spirited confidence that allows the group to drift into punk-y territory without alienating its pop-loving followers. It may take a few listens, but “Lightning” will satisfy any Matt & Kim fan, proving that the group is capable of maturing.
