Review: "More Is Than Isn't"—RJD2

Philadelphia–based musician and producer RJD2 rose to fame on the back of singles like 2008’s “Ghostwriter,” colorful, cut–and–paste blends of downbeat hip–hop, jazz, soul and funk. A few years have passed, and “More Is Than Isn’t” is released as an ambitious retelling of a genre he pioneered. Star track “Her Majesty’s Socialist Request” is built on a driving rhythm of handclaps and guitar riffs; it’s RJD2’s essence defined in four minutes—eclectic and innovative, with an ear for compelling beats you didn’t even know you liked. “A Lot of Night Ahead of You” is an energetic, if disorienting, concerto of layered synths and organs. The album closes with “Suite 3,” a whimsical call and response featuring guitar and flute that lets the listener down gently. It’s been a long trip.
