Album Review: "STN MTN/Kauai"—Childish Gambino

Taking a page out of Beyonce’s book, Childish Gambino dropped a new mixtape and EP out of nowhere, much to the surprise and the pleasure of his fans. The mixtape “STN MTN” and the EP “Kauai” sound very different from each other, but are connected thematically. “STN MTN” is not as conventionally radio friendly, feels more stripped down and features many shoutouts to Atlanta and the South. Kauai delivers with island beats and smart verses, especially on the standout “Sober.” Once again Bino shows his versatility as an artist and includes several well–placed collaborations (plus a bizarre few appearances from Jaden Smith). It’s a bit of a new sound, but recommended both for any longtime Donald Glover/Childish Gambino fan and for new listeners on the lookout for something fresh.
