As we progress into 2018, the 2000s drift farther away, even though it sometimes feels like 2008 was only three years ago. The decade was a weird time for music: numerous pop stars rose suddenly in popularity and fell off as quickly as they came, rock began to fade from mainstream music, and the early stages of the rise of electronic dance music were in place. The most dramatic shift, however, came in hip–hop music, as the genre experienced an evolution in style unlike any other. Bars about the gangster life and the streets became verses about Louis Vuitton and the bourgeoisie, and low sagging sweatpants with snapback hats transformed into pink polos and shutter shades.
