How to treat a milkshake

Justin Marks, spokesman for The Nice Guys' Guide to Getting Girls, a manual for understanding the female sex, reveals all. If you're still curious about the book, check out the Nice Guys' top 40 pickup lines at www.niceguysguide.com. As he says, "it's a tongue twister." Among other things, Street learned that you don't have to be a super stud to be a super big success at attracting women.

How did the authors decide that they wanted to write The Nice Guys' Guide to Getting Girls?

The reason John and Steve started this project is because of how pathetic they used to be. Let me tell you, back in college, the two of them couldn't get a date to save their lives. They just wanted to find a way for average nice guys like themselves to attract women.

Sounds like a noble cause.

Definitely, let me tell you what happened. The two of them set out to become friends with a whole bunch of women. I mean, they weren't setting out to write a book about it -- much less three -- they just wanted a better understanding of their female companions.

But the books have been well received?

Absolutely, the second and third books were actually just released because of how tremendously successful the first one was. After their first book was published, John and Steve got invited to teach courses based on the book in New York City and San Francisco. Their first book got published in Japan and is currently being translated for publication in Russia, Korea, Israel and Poland --

So international average guys are going to be getting girls as a result of these books?

Yeah, and it's funny cause we always wondered... Do the same kind of things about girls and dating apply in Japan that apply in America? We never thought that they would, but all these foreign publishing companies keep signing for the books. I mean, we had no idea that all male-female interactions were the same in Russian, Korean, Israeli and Polish cultures, but they keep telling us that they absolutely are.

Is there a specific age range that the book targets?

You see, that's what's funny. When we started writing the books we all thought that only college-age range, young, single guys would be reading it, but that's not true at all. A ton of our sales actually come from divorced middle-age guys who screwed up their first marriages and want to do a better job on their second ones. We get a bunch of e-mails from guys saying: "You know what, I'm 46 years old. I just read your book, and now I realize why my ten-year marriage failed miserably."

Oh, man. Too bad these books hadn't come out sooner. What were the biggest mistakes these guys were making?

Well... first let me tell you, the number one mistake that most guys make when they approach women.... Most guys turn a woman off within the first minute of conversation cause most guys brag nonstop about themselves and don't let the woman get a word in edgewise. You know when guys have nothing better to say to women, they just brag about themselves... how much money they make, what kind of car they drive, what their job is, whatever.

Yeah, I could testify for that. So what is your personal favorite part of the book?

I'd definitely have to say the oral sex chapter... about how to perform oral sex on a woman. We're actually working on a parallel chapter for the next book on how to properly instruct your companion when receiving oral sex.

So do you think most of the readers pick up the book out of genuine interest, or just for a few good laughs?

That's funny because I think 100% of the guys pick up the books just as a joke, or at least they claim to, but every guy finds something really useful in it in the end. Like I've never heard anyone say that they didn't learn anything at all from our book.

What makes your book different from other similar books on the market?

The main difference is that all the other books like this out there are written by guys who claim to be players. Our books are purely observational.

John and Steve have no airs of playerhood?

No, definitely not. In their book, John and Steve discuss how most guys are so overly aggressive that they try to take a woman home with them on the first night! Let's face it, to do that you either have to be rich, famous or good looking. For your regular, average nice guy, John and Steve suggest having ten or 15 minutes of really great conversation with the girl, and then she'll be intrigued that you're the one guy who didn't try to take her home that night. Hey guys, having a little bit of patience can go a long way.

So are John and Steve now both married?

Nope, nope, they're both still single. Umm... I think they're both happy dealing with business and writing and all that stuff right now. Like, they're too busy working on the book to think about marriage.

Understandably so. Have they found success with their own method in the past?

Oh yeah, absolutely. I mean, I didn't know John in his pathetic days, but everyone says that when John used to approach a woman, she would run... fast and far.

That's a riot. So do these methods also apply for average, nice homosexual guys, or just straight guys?

Umm... we haven't heard a whole lot from any homosexual men, but we have gotten very positive responses from lesbians. I mean, these books are not cheesy pickup guides and they're not about the one night stand. They're about really trying to understand the woman. Honestly, I think they're useful for anyone who wants a better understanding of the female. A lot of women buy them for their siblings, family, platonic male friends, even for their ex-boyfriends.
