Situated nicely on Philadelphia's most colorful street sits one of the city's most eclectic record stores. Spaceboy Records carries a modern mix of all the bands you can't find on Kazaa. Incidentally, they are only on the iTunes playlist of the cute skater boy down the hall who recently started locking his music (... jerk). If your latest party mix features Usher, Jay-Z, or bad '80s music, do everyone a favor and head downtown for something fresh.
Spaceboy Records' ultra-hip website, spaceboymusic.com is currently down, but a special message on the site promises that it will re-launch in early 2003. The excitement is building and ... wait ... 2003? All right, so maybe they're a little outdated, but it's hard to keep up with the Internet when, um, Actually, there are no excuses. Poor computer skills aside, the store is a great place for anyone who reads The Wire or watches Fuse. Today, you can find all the bands that your friends will be obsessed with this summer. Who can resist being a trendsetter? You can even bring your annoyingly faddish girlfriend along. Spaceboy carries a fairly large selection of popular tunes to appease even the most unhip listeners.
Owners John Stanley and Scott Ansill wanted the store to be a haven for music junkies. In a world of Tower Records and Virgin Megastores, the record universe seems to have lost some of its personality. At Spaceboy you can avoid the long lines and generic atmosphere that you'll find at most stores downtown. Just remember to wear your most random concert t-shirt if you want to fit in. Popped collars are not welcome.
No matter what your taste in music is, Spaceboy is sure to have exactly what you're looking for. Tear yourself away from your comfort zone of Coldplay, Yellowcard and Dave Matthews and head down to South Street for something crazy and new.
