Situated on South Street between a porno and a florist shop is Guacamole, a more urban and less expensive version of Urban Outfitters. Guacamole, or Guac for short, carries a wide array of trendy women's clothes, shoes, hats, belts and other must-have accessories. The space is wide and so is the selection; its two orange painted rooms hold items from Soda, Classified, Converse, Saucony and Kangaroo, just to name a few of the brands. But, Manager Steve Mackay, who has been at Guac for the past five years, notes that the store often "ignores brand names" and looks for the best quality items. That being said, Steve doesn't hesitate to remind one that Guac also carries Junkfood brand tees and apparel for "a lot cheaper than Urban -- $22.99 as compared to $28." The store has been around for 14 years and attracts a young crowd of both tourists and locals, especially during the warmer months. The staff is comprised of hipsters -- college aged to mid '20s. One might get the sense that its hipness is being stretched by the cheesy punk music on the radio, yet it is easily tuned out. After all, one can tolerate any kind of music in exchange for finding terry cloth sweat suits under $60. Guacamole is less a store for buying wardrobe classics, than it is perfect for finding more trendy pieces. Right now these include espadrils, metallic handbags, cowgirl hats and aviator lenses. Don't forget to stock up on various sexy-bordering-slutty going out tops. There are also simple and inexpensive jeans, skirts and capris nestled in between the louder items. Be forewarned -- these are not Citizens or Sevens, but Dollhouse and other lesser status symbol brands. Overall, Guacamole is inexpensive, funky and well worth a visit.
