Have you given up alcohol for Lent? Recently contracted mono and fear that drinking will injure your liver? Have a midterm tomorrow but want to take a non-alcoholic study break? In this collegiate environment where getting wasted regularly is often more inevitable than attending class, it can be hard to imagine a time when the best form of social lubrication didn't seem to be a complete necessity. At parties, BYOs and even Hillel, showing up can usually mean a drink (or two. or ten), especially as we try to uphold our "Social Ivy" rep. But, there are plenty of things to do without getting tipsy. Here are a few things to do when the booze cruise doesn't sail.
If you're in the mood for some late night meditation, try Midnight Yoga at the Rittenhouse Square studio (S. 18th and Walnut Streets). Movement and mantras are combined in a calming, candle-lit setting. Live music accompanies the session and don't worry, food is involved. After the class, snacks are provided as you chat about downward-facing dog with your classmates ($12, through March 15).
Perhaps Beijing and Savory aren't quite satisfying your culinary needs. Wander over to Whole Foods Market (929 South Street) and explore new foods sure to tantalize your taste buds. It really does get better than the Commons salad bar. Every Wednesday, the store offers samples of their newest products from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. The market also offers various cooking seminars each week, like a $5 fondue tasting.
Take a page out of your childhood for an afternoon, and get messy with paint. Make a present for your roommate or that guy you've been drooling over all semester in your Econ recitation. Channel your elementary school art classes and paint a pretty mug or plate at Color Me Mine (8524 Germantown Ave). It may sound lame, but who doesn't love painting ceramics?
Instead of grinding with a total stranger to Kanye's "Stronger," diversify your dance moves and take a class to learn the Argentine Tango with Dance Philadelphia at the University City Arts League (4226 Spruce Street). Add a Latin flavor to your next night out and impress your date with your suave moves.
Maybe that hint of neurosis that you thought ran in the family. doesn't. Find out what traits are genetically influenced and which ones you can attribute all to your awesome self. Check out "Identity: An Exhibition of You" at the Franklin Institute (222 North 20th Street) and explore your nerdy side - you're at Penn after all ($11.50-$14.25, through April 20).
