Oftentimes it's hard to stand out in the Northface-infested place that is the University of Pennsylvania. Well, if you're trying to find your personal style, it's probably best to steer clear of campus favorites Urban Outfitters and American Apparel. For truly unique finds, it's time to venture out into the world of vintage shopping. This may sound like a daunting task, but follow these tips and you'll be on your way to finding those diamonds in the rough.
Get in the right mindset.
Vintage shopping usually entails lots and lots of rummaging, but as we all know: no pain, no gain. As Penn students, we tend to like organization and structure. not only when it comes to academics, but really in all aspects of our lives - shopping included. Going to a disheveled thrift shop seems less enticing than adhering to the convenience of an overly categorized color-coded local chain. However, remember: you're looking for style, and that takes work. If you prepare yourself for the challenge of the vintage store, then you'll be good to go when you arrive.
Look for details.
There is a difference between well-preserved retro duds and shabby old hand-me-downs. To avoid purchasing crappy clothing, make sure to inspect all details of your purchase. Things to look out for: wobbly buttons, hidden moth holes, unsightly stains and funky odors. Keep in mind that sometimes you can salvage damaged goods with a few alterations. It might be worth putting in a little love and care to save a good buy.
Size doesn't matter.
No, really.
Usually, a few minor adjustments here and there can fix that too-big or too-small garment. This, however, does not mean that you should buy clothing without trying anything on. So, stop being lazy and get your ass to the dressing room. Also, remember: Sizing has changed through the decades. Grammy's size four high-waisted pencil skirt may fit a little tighter than you'd expect.
And they won't take Bursar. Just because it's old doesn't mean it's cheap. Being trendy may mean that we have to pay the high price of high fashion. Sometimes its worth it, and well, sometimes its not. If you find yourself saying "This shirt is worth six meals at Buddakan!" then you probably shouldn't buy it. Also, don't forget the importance of the ever-so-accurate "cost per wear" formula. If you aren't familiar with this equation, divide the amount you pay by the number of times you wear the item. The lower the cost/wear, the more worth it your purchase is. Therefore, if you think you will wear something a lot, buy it!
