Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination

The Franklin Institute

222 North 20th Street

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, everyone had savvy droids like C-3PO and R2-D2, the Millennium Falcon (equipped with captain Han Solo) was the most badass starship around and the weapon of mass destruction to fear was an imperial moon battle station aptly named the Death Star. Watching Star Wars transports me from the monotony of planet Earth to the excitement of a world full of droids, starships, romance and heroism; but, sadly, the sci-fi thrill ride only lasts for as long as a six-movie Star Wars marathon. simply not long enough. If only I could somehow travel through time and space to join my favorite characters (especially that sexy Han Solo) as they battle Darth Vader and the imperial forces. Well, luckily for Star Wars fans like me, The Franklin Institute's current exhibit Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination not only showcases props and costumes from the movies, but also explores modern technologies that could transform the fictitious Star Wars galaxy into reality. This exhibit gives Star Wars lovers hands-on experiences to learn about the science behind bots and landspeeders and then create their very own C-3POs and Millennium Falcons. Running through May 4th, Star Wars junkies have plenty of time to hit up the Franklin Institute and recreate their favorite hovercrafts and androids to bring the world of Star Wars to life. Unfortunately, they haven't quite mastered the technology it would take to reproduce hot spaceship captains like Han, but the Franklin Institute's exhibit will more than suffice to make that far, far away galaxy a little bit closer.
