Summer '09 Style Guide

Now that summer is upon us, Penn students are again scattered across the globe. No matter your location, there’s no reason to not be stylin’ this summer. Whether interning at a froufrou firm in Manhattan or scooping ice cream in your hometown, here are a few key trends to adopt and make your own as summer heats up.

Neon Accessories

Give even the most mundane outfit a pop of color with a standout accessory. Neon patent sandals abound at every price point, and candy-colored enamel is showing up on jewelry of all kinds. Want to get your neon on for cheap? Opt for a hot pink or electric yellow manicure.

Updated Shapes

White T-shirts, be gone! This summer, it’s all about reinterpreting the basics. Plain tees done in long lines and light fabrics take on a decidedly trendy twist this summer. Look for A-line tanks and swingy tunics, whether from Forever 21 or Alexander Wang. For an even more daring shape, try this summer’s harem pants with a pair of killer heels.

Gladiator Sandals

They’re ba-aaaack! Your favorite sandals from last summer have been reincarnated and reinterpreted for a stylish reappearance in the ‘09. Keep an eye out for gladiators with embellishment — studs, rhinestones, turquoise — or more strappy, slouchy versions of last summer’s staples.

Burnt-out Fabrics

Known as slub fabric by those fashion-y types, burnt-out cotton is making a huge splash this summer. Simple T-shirts and tank dresses get kicked up a few notches when they’re subtly see-through. Layer these tees with contrasting camis for a look that is simple yet chic – totally suitable for your three-hour summer session classes.

Maxi Dresses

Yet another summer ’08 mainstay that’s back and better than before. Look for flowing silhouettes in light fabrics and funky prints; anything in ombre is particularly flattering. Perfect for a day off or a night out.
