Philly knows how to party. And the 4th of July is no exception. Since Philadelphia is technically America’s birthplace, the city knows a thing or two about the holiday. And thankfully, there is no lack of activities throughout the entire week. So whether you’re looking for music, free food, or fireworks, you’re in luck. Remember freshman year BYOs at Dim Sum Garden, scarfing down their soup dumplings while tucking into a glass of wine—or more than a glass?

LA gets a bad rep at Penn. East coasters love to bash on my city. But I think LA deserves a fighting chance. Once you step into this town, I promise it will begin to change your mind. It has the beach, the mountains, and the city all in one convenient place. It’s the largest home to the entertainment industry in the world. And to top it all off, everyone is happy all the time because of the good weather. It’s all about that vitamin D. If you—like many other Penn students—are here this summer, consider yourself lucky. Here are 5 of the best things to do in LA over the summer.

I’m really inexperienced in the bedroom - I’ve had sex, but I can count the times with one hand. Because of this, I get so nervous whenever I’m hooking up with someone that I call it off. What can/should I do to help me calm my nerves when the next time rolls around? —Female, 2019, heterosexual but “bi-curious”

A summer fling can be a balmy breeze caressing your cheek. But it can also be a tropical maelstrom leaving you with an acute case of whiplash.

Imagine breathing the same air as Cate Blanchett, walking the red carpet with Michael B. Jordan, and watching close to 30 films in one week all for a Penn course credit. It sounds like an absolute dream, right? But here's the thing: it isn't. In fact, every summer the University of Pennsylvania actually allows this opportunity to a handful of ultra–lucky student applicants.

Spending your summer in our nation’s capital and not sure what to do with your time? Whether you’re working in politics or as a foreign spy, you’ll need some fun ideas. No, sitting on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial staring at the reflecting pool doesn’t count. Fortunately, Street has you covered. Here are five cool things you should be doing this summer in Washington, D.C.

Looking to survive the heat in Philly this summer? Fortunately, you live in a city famous for water ice—or flavored shaved ice, more authentically pronounced “wooder” ice. Did I get that right?

Raxx Vintage West, at 37th and Walnut Street, will close on May 31. The store is ending its tenure on Penn’s campus after it opened in August of 2017.

So, you got an internship at a tech company in San Francisco? Not sure what to do when you aren’t at a computer? San Francisco is a unique city with a diverse history and exciting neighborhoods. Luckily, it’s surprisingly small and easy to navigate. While you won’t be able to explore everything San Francisco has to offer in 3 months, you’re better off not wasting your time in Fisherman’s Wharf or similar tourist “attractions.” Here are five things to check out this summer.

After a long winter, Philly is finally heating up. And lucky for us, Philly is home to more public pools per capita than any other city in the country. There are 70 public outdoor pools and four indoor pools open for the 2018 season, and thankfully, enjoying them is just as easy as putting on your swimsuit and showing up. If you don’t mind a few rowdy kids, Philly’s public pools can become your summer oasis. Here is a roundup of the best:

May Xiao (E’21) is as busy as a Penn student can be: on top of chipping away at her Systems Engineering major, she writes for Penn Tech Review, works on MUSE Consulting’s PromoWeb team, serves as a graphic designer for The Consul, and is a sister of Sigma Psi Zeta. She also loves to dance, and spends much of her time in newly discovered downtown cafés. But when she’s not attending to her commitments or grinding away at CIS homework, she’s creating art.

I spot Arjun Malik (C ‘18) from across the room: tall, lanky, looking for someone in the clamor of Saxby’s. With all the noise, how could this be anyone’s preferred place to do anything? “It’s close to my place,” he admits, citing laziness for his choice in meeting place.

As the weather gets warmer, there are few things better than a cold treat. Ice cream, popsicles, water ice—you name it, we want to eat it. BUT there is one sweet, chilly delight on our campus that caters to our dairy free/vegan/health conscious/banana–crazed friends: banana whips. A staple of HipCityVeg, this dessert has an ice-cream-like consistency made with frozen bananas, and there are a whole host of toppings available. Here are some of our fav banana whip hacks.

Christopher Yao (C’17) chooses his words wisely. When he speaks, listeners get a sense that each word is chosen with care, thought, and consideration. Christopher’s speech, though, was not always this precise. When he was in the sixth grade, he was diagnosed with severe prognathism, more commonly known as an underbite, which affected his speech. Now, as the founder of Kids Change the World, a non–profit charity that improves children’s health worldwide, Christopher helps kids who experience symptoms similar to his own.

On an average morning, Jana Korn (C’18) wakes up hoping for good weather so she can go on a bike ride. Ideally, she might discover a few new cafes on the way and drop in for a spot of coffee to replenish her energy. “I spend a lot of time exploring the coffee shops of Philadelphia,” she admits. Lately, she tries to ride as much as possible in preparation for her post–grad summer trip: a two–month bike trip of the east coast from Key West and to Canada.
